Obama Asks Congress to Back $1 Billion Effort to Boost US Military Presence In Europe

Source: Associated Press via Huffington Post

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that the United States plans to boost its military presence in Europe as tensions simmer in the region over Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Standing next to Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Obama said the U.S. would rotate more American troops into the region and called on Congress to provide up to $1 billion to support the effort.

"Under this effort, and with the support of Congress, the United States will preposition more equipment in Europe," Obama said at Warsaw's Belweder Palace.

If approved, the funding will be used to increase military exercises and training missions on the continent, as well as rotations of air and ground forces, the White House said. Officials said Obama was also seeking to ramp up U.S. Navy participation in NATO deployments in the Black and Baltic Seas, plus working to boost the military capacity of non-NATO countries that sit on Russia's border, including Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

Attention Congress! Just Say No! Give the American taxpayers a break.
A billion dollars would be far better spent creating jobs for Americans to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure - highways, bridges, etc.

I thought Obama just gave a speech backing off from the US policing the world.

Is over $ 1.2 TRILLION per year. Lower figures are the result of
dishonest accounting. Veterans health care, for example, is counted
as safety net spending, not military.
Seriously folks, as Eisenhower warned, the militarists are
bankrupting the country.

And you will note that there are close to zero non-militarists
commenting in the media - if there were there would be a
discussion of a de-militarized zone in Central Europe, an idea that
has been kicked around for years, but it anathema to want
to solve all problems with military force or the threat of it.

The White House unveiled plans for a $1bn initiative to send more of its military to Europe on a temporary basis but stopped short of promising to increase its permanent presence, as some of Washington's allies are seeking. It said the US would review its presence on the continent.

Can someone please explain to me why the 40-odd nations of Europe need the United States to defend them from a single nation (Russia) with a population of 144 million people? Is Europe really that incapable of defending itself from a nation with a population four times SMALLER than the rest of the European nations? Europe has double our population and a GDP to match the U.S., so why is it that AMERICAN children have to suffer in inferior schools while their parents drive to work on crumbling roadways to afford their substandard healthcare and avoid starvation, so that the Pentagon can have a big enough budget to defend Europe from aggression?

We are not the worlds policemen.
