Pentagon to review claims US soldiers killed during search for Bergdahl
Source: Fox News
The sense of celebration surrounding the announcement Saturday of Bergdahl's release quickly has given way to controversy -- including questions surrounding his initial disappearance from his eastern Afghanistan post five years ago and the lengths to which U.S. forces went to find him.
The names and faces of six soldiers, who died allegedly during the search for Bergdahl, began to emerge within hours of the soldier's release.
Asked about the claims, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said it's "impossible" to confirm right now whether anybody's death was directly linked to the hunt for Bergdahl.

(182,803 posts)The Pentagon has already reviewed the casualty records and can't connect the 6 (or is it 2?) deaths to searching for Berdahl.

As a salesman I knew used to say to one of our suppliers, "why don't you sharpen up that pencil and see if you can find me a better price".

(4,742 posts)I had someone use that on me towards the end of the negotiation once...I told him that I had used a laser to sharpen this pencil and from here on out the pencil would only get more dull. So let's go ahead and wrap this deal up quickly. LOL.

(12,412 posts)Regardless of Bergdahl's status a mission was created to find him. Our soldiers do not get to pick the missions nor do they get to bemoan the results.

Weve known for years now that George W. Bush received a presidential daily briefing on Aug. 6, 2001, in which he was warned: Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S. Weve known for almost as long that Bush went fishing afterward.
What we didnt know is what happened in between the briefing and the fishing, and now Suskind is here to tell us. Bush listened to the briefing, Suskind says, then told the CIA briefer: All right. Youve covered your ass, now.

(46,416 posts)for various purposes, or just didn't know what their people were doing--it's also possible, as the NYT article puts forth, that Bergdahl's platoon mates simply blame him for every death for four months after he left, true or not.

(85,996 posts)The furious search for Sergeant Bergdahl, his critics say, led to the deaths of at least two soldiers and possibly six others in the area. Pentagon officials say those charges are unsubstantiated and are not supported by a review of a database of casualties in the Afghan war.
The soldiers began a frantic search for Sergeant Bergdahl using Predator drones, Apache attack helicopters and military tracking dogs. The most intense search operation, leaked war reports show, wound down after eight days well before the deaths of six soldiers on patrols in Paktika Province in late August and early September. But, complicating matters, some soldiers contend they were effectively searching for 90 days because of clear orders: If they heard rumors from locals that Sergeant Bergdahl might be nearby, they should patrol the area.
The anger toward Sergeant Bergdahl increased exponentially after Sept. 4, when they learned that two members of Third Platoon, which routinely went on tandem missions with Second Platoon and who they believed were also searching for Sergeant Bergdahl, had been killed in an ambush. Pfc. Matthew Martinek and Lt. Darryn Andrews, both of them friends of Mr. Cornelison, died in the ambush. A Defense Department official said it was unclear whether the two men were killed directly because of the search for Sergeant Bergdahl.

(62,270 posts)The soldiers need a justification for their lost comrades, and a "failure of intelligence" due to "drones being used for the search" is that justification.

(18,124 posts)examined thoroughly. Mental efficiency, PTSD from violence and gore. The insanity of war can be explained to NO ONE who has not been in the thick of it. I refuse to judge this individual because I did not walk in his shoes. Combat assignments sometimes CAN BE too hard on some. No judgment until all facts are known. This RW frenzy of lies, rumors and downright 'hang em high' shows me how many "82nd Chairborn Div." people are out there. Disgusting and revolting. If you weren't there, STFU!!!!!

(46,416 posts)to do so within hours of Bergdahl's release? The Pentagon doesn't have this info amassed the same way, obviously. I believe the GOP knew that Bergdahl was going to either die (bash Obama), languish (bash Obama), or get sent home (bash Obama), and had a plan for all three outcomes--including bringing forth evidence against Bergdahl before he even landed on US soil. I think the attacks against Bergdahl, some of which may have merit and should be considered at some point, were coordinated in advance.

(4,835 posts)That's what I took from this.
"Really - we sent 6 guys to their doom looking for this dude?"
No Way...
I'm sure six guys were killed in the weeks following Bergdahl's disappearance/capture...but I doubt there was much of an attempt to find him beyond the first few hours of his disappearance.
Patrols went on as usual. "Keep an eye out for..."
Guys were killed

(4,835 posts)of this claim...If FOX is walking it back...well...

(51,557 posts)On the contrary. Fox is suggesting the military is now looking into the deaths as being caused by Bergdahl. Which is bullshit.
What is it you think Fox is walking back? They've gone full Benghazi on the Bergdahl story.
