Roundup: Damage is so widespread that some insurers rate the storm as catastrophic

Source: OMAHA WORLD HERALD

By Nancy Gaarder and Jay Withrow

The most rain the Omaha metro area has recorded on a single June day caused widespread flooding in northeast Omaha and Council Bluffs, requiring authorities to undertake a dramatic rescue near 16th Street and Ames Avenue.

Farther north, Fort Calhoun and Blair were among the communities pummeled by strong winds and hail. Siding was shredded, windshields shattered and even some roofs had holes punched in them.

Gov. Dave Heineman was to survey damage in Blair and Fort Calhoun this afternoon. In Omaha, Mayor Jean Stothert was planning to visit the flooded area.

Damage was so widespread that some insurance companies were rating the storm as catastrophic. Woodhouse dealerships in Blair and Missouri Valley sustained hail damage to $162 million in inventory.

Is Ernie Chambers still active? He was my hero back when I attended UNL from 1969-1972. (I grew up in Grand Island)

He is now back in the legislature in the same district he represented for 38 years. First elected in 1970

I see him 3-4 times a year in public. I always thank him for issues he fights for like choice, working people, etc...

That in some states voters are now denied the right to re-elect those legislators they deem qualified to serve. Terms limits are for those who would deny the majority voters that right. We have terms limits....we call them elections.
