Bomb Squad Sweeping Georgia Courthouse After Shooting
First published June 6th 2014, 10:59 am

A bomb squad was sweeping a Georgia courthouse after a gunman wearing a gas mask and a bulletproof vest shot a sheriff's deputy in the leg on Friday.

The suspect was seen carrying a smoke grenade and an assault rifle at the Forsyth County courthouse, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Officials from Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and a SWAT team are on the scene in Cumming, about an hour north of Atlanta, NBC affiliate 11Alive.com reported. Authorities are using a robot to search for a possible explosive device.

Traffic was being rerouted away from the courthouse and nearby businesses were evacuated.

Heavily armed sovereign citizen wounds deputy in doomed GA courthouse takeover plot
By Travis Gettys
Friday, June 6, 2014 14:22 EDT

Authorities shot and killed a sovereign citizen Friday morning outside a Georgia courthouse after he brought weapons and explosives in an attempt to take over the building.

Investigators said Dennis Marx arrived at the Forsyth County Administration Building with an assault rifle, bulletproof vest, smoke grenades, and a gas mask.

Marx also brought water and other supplies, ammunition, zip-tie restraints, and buckets of homemade explosives to the courthouse, said Sheriff Duane Piper.

“He came here with the purpose of occupying the courthouse,” Piper said.

He deployed stop sticks at the courthouse entrance to prevent other vehicles from driving closer and opened fire from his vehicle.

Marx was met outside the courthouse by a deputy – who distracted and then fatally shot him through the windshield of the man’s SUV.

Bills to allow more guns into courthouses advance in six states
March 18th, 2013 by Bill Raftery Leave a reply »

A litany of legislation has been introduced in the 2013 to allow more people to carry firearms into U.S. state courthouses. Today I’ll be looking at the bills that have moved or are moving in this regard.
snip
Georgia

I mentioned a few weeks ago the situation in Georgia; by law, firearms are not generally permitted inside the state’s courthouses and there is a specific crime of carrying in a courthouse (O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127(b)(2)), but there are 16 categorical exceptions for people like law enforcement, certain judges, certain retired judges, prosecutors, etc.

HB 512 would effectively allow anyone with a concealed weapons permit to carry into a courthouse UNLESS the court provided security screening at the doorway. Specifically, it provides

A license holder shall be authorized to carry a weapon in a government building or courthouse where ingress into such building or courthouse is not restricted or screened by security personnel during the hours the government building or courthouse is open for business. A person who is not a license holder and who attempts to enter a government building or courthouse with a weapon shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. A person who enters or attempts to enter a government building or courthouse where ingress is restricted or screened by security personnel shall be guilty of a misdemeanor; provided, however, that a person who exits such building or courthouse or leaves such location upon his or her observation that such building or courthouse has security personnel restricting or screening ingress into such building or courthouse shall not be guilty of violating this subsection

HB 512 was met with surprise by judges, who have now come out in opposition. Despite the protest by judges, the bill was approved by the full House on March 7.

In addition to HB 512, HB 60 amends an existing categorical exemption and would allow all retired state and federal judges to carry. It was approved by the full House February 13.

First published June 6th 2014, 10:59 am

A bomb squad was sweeping a Georgia courthouse after a gunman wearing a gas mask and a bulletproof vest shot a sheriff's deputy in the leg on Friday.

The suspect, identified as Dennis Marx, was shot multiple times and was killed by the sheriff's deputy while making a beeline for the Forsyth County courthouse, officials said. Marx was carrying a smoke grenade and other explosives, many of which were homemade, and was heavily armed when he approached the courthouse, authorities said at a press conference Friday.

Investigators believed his home was possibly booby-trapped and were trying to get in.

The sheriff's deputy is expected to survive.

Marx also had a spike strip to stop other cars from driving near him, officials said, and had multiple rounds of ammunition, zip ties, and water on him.

"He had been planning (the attack) for a while," Forsyth County sheriff Duane Piper said.

Ann Shafer, who identified herself as the suspect's attorney, told 11 Alive that her client always dressed in paramilitary clothing whenever she met with him and said that he had made "veiled threats" recently.

Sheriff: Gunman planned assault at Ga. courthouse
By/Crimesider Staff/CBS/AP/June 6, 2014, 2:34 PM

CUMMING, Ga. - A man armed with guns, explosives and other supplies shot and wounded a deputy outside a Georgia courthouse and was equipped to take hostages once he got inside, officials said Friday.

The suspect, Dennis Marx, hadn't been living at his home for at least 10 days and may have booby-trapped it with explosives, authorities said. Bomb squads were checking both the home and the courthouse.

Marx was shot and killed at the scene, said Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper, who said the gunman had driven up to the courthouse and threw out smoke devices and homemade spike strips to prevent officers from reaching him. Both homemade and commercially made explosives were in his car, suggesting he had planned the assault for days, Piper said.

Marx also allegedly had water and other supplies, including zip ties that can be used to bind people's hands. Piper said the wounded deputy prevented others from getting hurt when he encountered Marx, though it was not clear if that deputy killed the suspect.

like it's a get-out-of-jail-free card. Because it sounds all Constitution-y, or something.

Public service announcement to violent wingnut freaks: we already have words for violent individuals and groups who don't feel bound by United States laws. "Criminal," "felon," "homicide suspect," etc...

I'm so old I remember when the GOP was the "law-and-order" party. Now they're the armed-revolution party.

Did he think that he could overthrow the government by holding hostages in a Georgia courthouse?

Was he planning to kill a bunch of people and then himself? To what end? Doing so wouldn't in any way advance the sovereign citizen cause, so what's the point?

I tend to believe that actions like this are usually caused by mental illness.

Gunman intended to ram courthouse, attach bombs to hostages
By JEREMY REDMON
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution June 7, 2014

ATLANTA — The heavily armed gunman who attempted to storm the Forsyth County courthouse in Georgia Friday planned to smash his SUV into the building and attach bombs to hostages.

Dennis Marx wore two sets of bulletproof vests. That initially made it difficult for sheriff's deputies to stop him before he was shot dead.

Marx rented a particular type of SUV - a Nissan Armada - he thought he would be able to drive up the steps of the courthouse and into the building. Found inside his vehicles were explosives made to physically link hostages together.

Forsyth Sheriff Duane Piper revealed those details Saturday during an interview at his office in Cumming, while hailing the bravery of his deputies and underscoring how their training kicked in.

"Between what he had with him, what he had on him, what he had in the vehicle and what he had at his house, he was coming there to take hostages," said Piper, who took office in January of last year. "He was coming there to occupy that courthouse and kill as many people as he could."
