John Kerry: Taliban 'Picks Fight' With U.S. 'At Enormous Risk'

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – JUNE 8, 2014, 9:49 AM EDT

Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday defended the administration's decision to negotiate for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, assuring that the U.S. will protect Americans from the Taliban.

"I don’t think anybody should doubt the capacity of the United States of America to protect Americans," Kerry said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" when asked about the five Taliban members released from Guantanamo Bay in the prisoner swap. "So these guys pick a fight with us, in the future or now or at any time, at enormous risk, and we have proven what we’re capable of doing with al Qaeda."

Kerry conceded that there is some risk releasing Guantanamo prisoners, but argued that Americans won't necessarily be in greater danger.

"I’m not telling you that they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved, but they also have an ability to get killed doing that," he said, also noting that the Qataris aren't the "only ones keeping an eye on" the released Taliban members over the next year.

who the repukes forced out of the running. It was McCain who really wanted Kerry to take that job, partially to endanger Kerry's Senate seat.

I am always suspicious of DU members who attack members of our administration. Where is the love? Kerry's doing a great job. You try it sometime.

Rather, the US went halfway around the world and attacked them.

It is questionable to what degree they allowed anything. Remember, this is territory that the mighty US can't even control. 2nd, of all, the Taliban offered NUMEROUS times to give him up to us.

The number of women burning themselves to death with cooking oil to escape brutal beatings by men they were forced against their will to marry has dropped below 100 per year. That's down nearly ten-fold from where it once was.

Plus, for purely selfish reasons, we've left behind a stable government which won't allow terrorist groups to organize there.

Kerry has long experience with Afghanistan.

He's met many times with Afghan leaders, and isn't afraid to deal directly, face to face (in Afghanistan) about criticism of U.S. tactics.

Maybe.
Probably.
He sure would have been light years ahead of Bush's regime, but still I so often wish he'd shut up or get someone media savvy to filter his sound bites.

I don't think Kerry tries to make 'sound bites'. He's in a serious, dangerous, front line position. He is a very brave person.

Sound-bites are for the thousands of (waste of time) tabloid media companies and political campaigns. People like Boehner only make sound bites and need handlers.

the US has a drone program and satellites to watch and listen. It is very unlikely, in my opinion, that these POW could go back in to hiding. And I believe that if the intelligence was released as to the whereabouts of the POWs if they left their home to go into hiding, that they may be neutralized by their own country men before exposing the terrorist outpost.

What is clear is that the CNN reporter was trying to put words in Kerry's mouth. She failed. Note also that her questions are all based on Republican talking points.

She even tried to get a rise out of him by using the word "swiftboating" - then tried to imply that he had reasons to question the service of the man.

As to the Taliban released, he was responding to the obvious talking point of the Republicans that the release puts Americans in jeopardy. His response was strong - and he avoided several attempts to say things that would have either given away US measures or given anything to the Republicans to use.

For those on the thread troubled - or saying it sounds like "Rumsfeld", exactly what would you have wanted him or any other administration person to have said?
