Ted Cruz, Tea Party favourite, renounces Canadian citizenship

Source: CBC News

Canada-born U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has given up his citizenship from his birth country, making good on a promise from last summer.

Spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said the Tea Party favourite formally gave up his citizenship May 14. He received official confirmation of the action at his Houston home Tuesday.

Cruz was born in Alberta, Canada, in 1970. The possible 2016 presidential candidate's mother is American, making him eligible for the White House.

News that he had renounced his citizenship was first reported by the Dallas Morning News. The newspaper also broke that Cruz had dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship when he released his birth certificate in August.

2. Chris Alexander says citizenship bill will withstand constitutional test

Bill C-24 would give the government powers to strip Canadian citizenship from dual nationals “who were members of an armed force or an organized armed group engaged in armed conflict in Canada.” Citizenship would also be revoked from dual nationals who have been “convicted of terrorism, high treason, or spying offences.”

Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati warned MPs, senators and the Governor General, in separate letters sent on Monday, not to pass Bill C-24 until the government referred a key provision of the bill to the Supreme Court for a legal opinion.

At the heart of Galati's challenge are provisions contained in the citizenship bill that would strip dual nationals of their citizenship and bar them from reacquiring it.

He retains Cuban citizenship as a child of a Cuban citizen. Cuba does not recognize dual citizenship. http://havana.usint.gov/service.html
Although he technically could not renounce his Cuban citizenship, I suspect great hay could be made over it and may be something Democrats might want to pursue.

At least ask him why he doesn't self-deport. Self-deportation would be the fine up-standing Republican way to be a gentleman and set an example.

I would not be surprised at all if there is some irregularity in Cruz's immigration history. His father didn't bother becoming an American citizen until 2005.

39. Sec. 1, Article 2 of Constitution
Thu Jun 12, 2014, 09:46 AM
Jun 2014

Section 1 of Article Two of the United States Constitution sets forth the eligibility requirements for serving as president of the United States:

“ No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

So, does that mean if he's been a US resident 14 yrs. he CAN run for pres?
