Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl Heading Back to U.S.

Source: NBC News

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is scheduled to fly back to the United States early Friday, NBC News has learned.

Two senior defense officials say the freed Taliban prisoner will arrive at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio sometime after midnight local time.

Bergdahl will not make any public appearances during Phase 3 of his reintegration process and there will be no media coverage of his return or during his stay at Brooke Army Medical Center.

After being freed from three years of Taliban captivity in a controversial prisoner swap, Bergdahl was sent to the U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.

They entire family is going to be targets for right wing nutjobs. They should be protected the way people are in the witness protection system - new names, new place to live, new lives. It's the only way they will be safe.

I just hope that Bowe Bergdahl can recover and get back with his family so he can try to adjust to a normal life. I'm very much afraid that the demonization that has been done by the right wing will induce some nutjob to go after him.

With different hair styles and maybe hair color for the members of the family, I doubt most people would recognize them, so moving and a change of name could be very effective to protect them.

3. POW reintegration process

Ex-POWs: Bergdahl Needs, Deserves Time to Adjust

Phase 1 of reintegration begins as soon as a POW is released and involves initial medical treatment and psychological support in the theater where the release occurs. Each phase of the process involves debriefing of the returned POW, focusing especially on any tactical information the returnee may be able to immediately provide to the military.

Bergdahl is currently in Phase 2 of the process, known as "decompression," which experts say can last from three days to a few weeks. For Bergdahl, this phase is taking place at Landstuhl. Although stable, he requires nutritional care after years of bad food, as well as other medical work military officials have refused to elucidate.
In Phase 3 of reintegration, which will occur at San Antonio Military Medical Center, Bergdahl will be reunited with family and begin to move back slowly into normal life in America.

"Families play a critical role in assisting the returnee in gaining control and predictability over their circumstances," according to an Army fact sheet. "The key is to include the family in the reintegration planning to ensure they understand the benefits of the process."

During this final phase, which officials said can last weeks or longer, Bergdahl will be attended to by a large, multidisciplinary team that has been monitoring his case and planning for his return for years in twice-yearly meetings, said Consaul of Army South.

Among them are planners, air crew, chaplains, medical personnel, public affairs officials and attorneys, she said.

These attacks on Sgt. Bergdahl and his family have been shameful and un-American.

Questions can be answered later and in private. What the military does or does not
do in this case is none of the business Rep. Jeff Miller or any other tea bagging piece
of crap. This whole thing is to the point of being stupid because President Obama is
the C. I. C. too (Commander in Chief) and Sec. Hagel's actions are totally
legit. They knew better then telling congress because they knew that the hatred that
the congressional republicans have for the President is so great that somebody might very
well have exposed the deal and Sgt. Bergdahl would have wound up dead.

The number of people trashing him is disgusting (and surprise...they are all RWers who have never served in the military). The "deserter" story is completely unconfirmed except by the RW media.

(wonder why "truth tellers" need a "media guy" anyway? They will be all over FOX tonight whipping up the toothless pitchforked mob into a bloodthirsty frenzy for Bergdahls welcome home. Their frantic CYA campaign is getting more suspicious.)

They don't want to be seen as his tormenters, they simply want him to embarass Barack Obama. If he gets in front of a Congressional committee, they'll act respectful to him, and hope that he blathers some Stockholm-syndrome anti-Americanisms to show what the President traded five Taliban commanders for. It's about destroying trust in the Democratic Party as foreign policy experts.

Benghazi is about pinning the Arab Spring on the Obama administration, and on Hillary, too. Looks like the fruit that started out as pretty blossoms a few years ago is starting to rot on the ground.

There will be an expectation that when Bergdahl is brought before a Congressional committee, that members will call for his head. Instead, they will speak respectfully to him, sort of like a lawyer questioning a sympathetic witness for the other side.

It's their hope that he will prove to be a less than sympathetic individual as the testimony comes forth, and they'll have made their point.

And by the accounts from one of his old friends, he wasn't the strongest person ever to enlist in the first place.

Hubby glanced at the tv screen and said of CNN/MSNBC coverage of Bergdahl, "I guess they've found a replacement for 'news' about the lost airplane."

I feel for the whole family: they and their son have become pawns in the latest media frenzy, especially on the RW. I hope they manage to survive it.
