(AFP) Top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called Friday for Iraqis to take up arms against "terrorists" who have overrun swathes of the country in a major offensive.
"Citizens who are able to bear arms and fight terrorists, defending their country and their people and their holy places, should volunteer and join the security forces to achieve this holy purpose," his representative announced on his behalf during Friday prayers in the city of Karbala.
"He who sacrifices for the cause of defending his country and his family and his honour will be a martyr," he added.
The elderly Sistani, who rarely appears in public, is highly influential in the Shiite Muslim world and is adored by millions.

Although he also said this in 2008, "Barack Obama is not going to beat Hillary Clinton in a single
Democratic primary. Ill predict that right now."
1 March 2003: "We talk here about Shiites and Sunnis as if they've never lived together. Most Arab countries have Shiites and Sunnis, and a lot of them live perfectly well together." Also: "Very few wars in American history were prepared better or more thoroughly than this one by this president." B. Kristol

(62,528 posts)what I'm waiting for is when Iraq, after that puppet maliki is overthrown, nationalizes the oil industry.

But I think Pol Pot's heart attack was pretty convenient.
Everybody needs to see Rachel Maddow's 2 shows on how we got into
Iraq (lies) and why we went there (oil).

(62,528 posts)but asshole pot was in his 70's when he croaked. And given how he lived, it's really no surprise that he had a heart attack.
on edit: I believe the bombs will start flying as soon as the oil fields are threatened.
the contract workers have/are being evac'd, which means that there is a real threat that the oil fields maybe next on the hit list.
THAT is what I find very convenient about the sudden mention of helping out failure maliki with the use of drones or missiles.
this civil war has been going on a while now, but as soon as the moneyed interests are threatened, look out below!
