Autopsy Released on US Inmate in Botched Execution
World | Associated Press | Updated: June 14, 2014 12:30 IST

Oklahoma City: An autopsy released on Friday in a botched 43-minute US execution that drew world outrage says the prisoner had healthy veins but his body had multiple punctures from the execution team trying to find them.
The private autopsy was released by attorneys for Oklahoma death row inmates.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Joseph Cohen said more information was needed to determine why Clayton Lockett died after his execution was stopped, but his preliminary findings indicate that the execution team had tried repeatedly to insert an intravenous line into his body without success, including into deep veins on both sides of Lockett's groin.

A doctor inside the death chamber during the April 29 execution reported that Lockett did not receive a full dose of the three lethal drugs after his vein collapsed, but Cohen said in his report that Lockett had "excellent integrity of peripheral and deep veins for the purpose of achieving venous access."

Oklahoma executions typically involve IVs inserted into both arms, but prison officials have reported an IV specialist hired for Lockett's execution was unable to find viable veins on his arms, legs or feet. A doctor overseeing the execution suggested tapping the femoral vein in Lockett's groin area, but prison officials have not said who inserted the IV, and state law allows the identities of the doctor and the IV expert to remain secret.

Oklahoma officials botch execution of Death Row inmate, causing him to writhe in pain for over 40 minutes before dying

An Oklahoma inmate condemned to death by lethal injection died because of an error in the way the IV was administered, according to the results of a private autopsy released Friday.

The autopsy, which was arranged by lawyers representing condemned Oklahoma inmates, determined that prisoner Clayton Lockett, who died following a botched execution, had healthy veins but his body had punctures from multiple attempts to tap them.

Pathologist Dr. Joseph Cohen performed the autopsy, which challenged the official explanation that Lockett died because of his veins being 'blown out.'
Cohen said Lockett had good veins. He said it appeared the execution team failed repeatedly while inserting an intravenous line.

'Contrary to statements by the state, Mr. Lockett’s veins did not collapse or "blow out,"' according to Cohen’s findings. 'Rather, despite the excellent condition of Mr. Lockett’s veins, the execution team made numerous failed attempts to set an IV, eventually setting an improperly placed and ineffective IV in Mr. Lockett’s femoral vein.'

They're the only medical practitioners I know who regularly put down sentient beings. Of course, they'd be hard pressed to find a one of them who'd be so calloused.

Yes, blame all those sub-humans too...but blame the so-called "IV Expert" who couldn't manage the simple task of establishing a line without tearing the shit out of every vein Clayton Lockett had.

This should not have been happening to begin with. The death penalty must be abolished, period. The only reason this person was there and failing to start a lethal IV is because of the death penalty. This man deserved to be in prison because he was a violent menace to the rest of us, but the death penalty is a scourge on our supposedly civilized society.

If that isn't torture enough, I don't know what is. The guy knows they are sticking him to kill him, and they have to do it over and over again...and then in the groin? OMG!

We are not a humane species.

Could Dr. Cohen get blow back for these findings because he may have not followed what state politicians wanted this report to read.

The poking and prodding and injecting poison is all about pretending to the witnesses that this is a humane and clinical procedure, as compared to having blood and brain parts flying all over the place.

Let's just put an end to this medieval barbarity. Just lock these people in a cell for the rest of their lives.

15. can't believe an 'expert' couldn't set a catheter in a vein & be sure was actually IN the vein.

jesus blood pours out of the catheter when its set properly.

would have been an easier/painless death if they just let them bleed out into a bucket.
