U.S. Orders Evacuation of Many Embassy Workers From Baghdad
Source: New York Times
The American Embassy in Baghdad plans to evacuate a substantial number of its personnel this week in the face of a militant advance that rapidly swept from the north toward the capital, the State Department announced on Sunday.
The embassy, a beige fortress on the banks of the Tigris River within the heavily-secured Green Zone, where Iraqi government buildings are also located, has the largest staff of any United States Embassy.
The exact number of people being evacuated was not clear Sunday. The embassy would remain open, a person familiar with the planning said, and much of its staff of about 5,500 would stay in Baghdad. The American government is expected to call the move a relocation, suggesting that it is a temporary precaution, the person said.

what an incompetent jerk he and Bremer were to set up these dominoes. I blame/lay the chaos, violence, sectarian and otherwise, directly at their feet. It's not that complicated, the PNAC cabal created this mess.

(4,423 posts)that Joe Biden called Iraq one of Obama's greatest Achievements in 2010.... I am being told how the surge strategy employed toward the end of Bush's term was a great success by the military and that the premature removal of all U.S. forces by Obama which he did out of purely political expediency is what has allowed this great tragedy to happen....
I guess we will see what the end result is going to be...

(18,124 posts)to get the onus off 'their boy'. Every thinking person knows who bears responsibility for this fustercluck. I just laugh real loud at them when they start their BS about Obama in any context, really pisses them off.

(4,423 posts)Obama himself called the Iraq war a success in 2011 as the last troops were drawn down.... You can bet that the rightwing will be playing videos and declaring that because the President abandoned Iraq for purely political reasons the Iraqis now cannot defend themselves from this onslaught of ISIS.
We have left fully manned military bases behind after every conflict except Vietnam and Iraq. You can expect the rightwing to try and paint Iraq as Obama's Vietnam...

This is what happens when people like Assad (and Bushgang!) are pampered & worshiped, given time to kill & grow. Never brought to even a World Court to face a little Justice. They're like a Cancer on the world.
