At least 48 people were killed in a small coastal town in Kenya on Sunday evening, after dozens of suspected Somali militants armed with automatic weapons attacked a police station and hotels, according to police.

The men hijacked a van and used it to travel to targets including the police station in the town of Mpeketoni, local residents told BBC News. Witnesses said that the gunmen threw explosives into the station, before entering to steal weapons.

They then set two hotels on fire, and sprayed bullets into the streets during the incident that started at around 8pm local time, as residents watched Fifa World Cup matches on TV in the town around 30 miles (20km) southwest of the tourist resort of Lamu, and about 60 miles (100 km) from the Somali border.

The attack reportedly met little resistance from Kenya’s security apparatus, and raged on until early Monday morning.

'Islamists' attack Kenyan coastal town

Suspected Islamist militants have attacked hotels and a police station in the Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni, military officials say.

Witnesses reported seeing buildings on fire and hearing gunfire in the town, which is near Lamu island.

It is not yet clear if there are any casualties.

Kenya has suffered a number of militant attacks since 2011 when its forces entered neighbouring Somalia to combat al-Shabab fighters.

on the Indian ocean; it's a beautiful area with many good people.
Lamu town is one of the oldest Swahili settlements in Africa. Founded in 1390 it is a Unesco World Heritage Site and has been a tranquil and safe tourist destination until fairly recently.
So sad for Kenya and for the world.

48 die in Kenya town terror attack

At least 48 people were killed when dozens of Somali extremists wielding automatic weapons attacked a small Kenyan coastal town for hours, assaulting the police station, setting two hotels on fire, and spraying bullets into the street, officials said today.

The assault began at around 8pm local time last night as residents were watching World Cup matches on TV. The attack met little resistance from the country's security apparatus, and lasted until early this morning.

Authorities blamed al-Shabab, Somalia's al Qaida-linked terror group.

Kenya's top police commander, David Kimaiyo, said the death toll was 48.

NAIROBI, Kenya—Gunmen attacked a town in a popular local tourist region along Kenya's Indian Ocean coast, killing an estimated 48 people, officials said Monday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which occurred late Sunday in a region with a long history of tribal conflict. But Kenyan authorities immediately blamed al-Shabaab, a Somali militant group that is allied with al Qaeda and has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks in Kenya, including last year's four-day assault on a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Two Nissan minibuses drove into the center of the small town of Mpeketoni at about 8 p.m. and gunmen jumped out and started shooting people, Kenya's Interior Ministry said. They also attacked and set fire to at least two hotels—Breeze View and Taweel, according to the government disaster operations center.

Police fought against the assailants into the evening as surveillance planes took to the air overhead. Television footage showed burned-out buildings, torched cars and bodies piled on top of each other.

Kenyan military spokesman Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir said fighting had subsided by Monday morning and the assailants had "retreated back to the forest." He said it was unclear how many attackers there were, but that officials believed it was between 20 and 30.

8. Al-Shabab Declares Kenya an ‘Official War Zone’

Al-Shabab terrorists in Kenya killed nine more people overnight Tuesday. It happened in the same Kenyan coastal area where the Somali militant group slaughtered 48 people Sunday night.

The Islamist group says the attack was in response to Kenya’s “brutal oppression of Muslims in Kenya.” Witnesses say the gunmen singled out non-Muslims during the attack, going door to door demanding to know if the men inside were Muslim and if they spoke Somali.

The merciless tactics were reminiscent of al-Shabab’s attack on an upscale mall in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi last September. At least 67 people were killed in that assault, some of them after not being able to answer questions about Islam.

Al-Shabab is warning tourists to stay away from Kenya, saying that the once peaceful east Africa nation “is now officially a war zone.”

It's one thing when the white, the Western, and the wealthy are under attack.

It's apparently quite another when it's just some everyday Kenyans.

At least 12 women were abducted during the latest attack on Kenya's coast, which also left 15 people dead, residents have told the BBC.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has blamed "local political networks" for the overnight raid on two villages near the town of Mpeketoni.

But Somalia's al-Shabab group had earlier said it was behind the attack.

At least 49 people died in a separate raid on hotels and a police station in Mpeketoni on Sunday.
