Fox News Suggests Obama Captured Benghazi Suspect To Boost Hillary’s Book Tour

Source: THINKPROGRESS

A Fox News anchor suggested that President Obama captured one of the alleged architects of the September 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi to boost Hillary Clinton’s presidential prospects.

Speaking on Fox News’ Outnumbered just moments after news broke that the United States had captured Ahmed Abu Khattala, Kennedy mused, “you have a former Secretary of State who is in the middle of a high profile book tour, I think this is convenient for her to shift the talking points to some of the things she has been discussing.”

The sentiment — that Obama timed Khattala’s capture for political benefit — was quickly echoed by other conservatives. Rory Cooper, an aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, tweeted, “While it’s great to see they caught the Benghazi suspect, it’s important to remember, he wasn’t really hiding.”

The United States filed the first criminal charges in the Benghazi attack in August of 2013. Khatalla is linked to the Islamist group Ansar al-Shariah, one of the militias that has served as the de facto military within many parts of the country since the overthrow of Libyan dictator Moamar Ghadaffi. He had previously told reporters that he had nothing to do with the attack, despite witnesses placing him at the scene during the night of the assault.

The United States has been attempting to convince the Libyan government for months now to move on the suspects, but has been unable to due to the political chaos that has gripped the country. “The Libyan government has to wrestle with this idea: ‘What would that mean to us if we apprehended some of these people, if we tried them, if we handed them over?’ ” Gen. Carter F. Ham, a former head of U.S. Africa Command, told a conference last year. “It’s a very, very complex issue.”

Just because your guy Nixon sabotaged the Vietnam peace talks and Reagan screwed over the Iranian hostages to embarrass Carter, doesn't mean that our politicians are so caviler about committing treason for political points. In fact, here the Obama administration is doing what it is SUPPOSED to be doing. (And a damn sight quicker than your boy Bush in his utter failure to get Bin Laden...)

Two hallmarks of modern conservative asshattery: the rampant projection of their faults onto all of their opponents, and the belief that politicians doing their jobs competently are merely posturing for political points.

This is how Karl Rove played the media and they assume we do the same thing. Remember when Bush was going to make a state visit to the UK and there were going to be so many protesters, something on the order of 3 million, that they couldn't actually drive him to Buckingham Palace, they had to take him there by helicopter from the airport? It was going to be a public relations nightmare. The level of opposition to Bush and Poodle Boy's war of aggression was going to be inescapable. Suddenly Michael Jackson was arrested. There was no reason that arrest had to take place when it did. I'm sure someone on the GOP team chambered that one up for Karl to use whenever he thought he needed it. So, the enter state visit disappeared from mainstream media coverage. Of course the media was a partner in this dance. They know which side of the bread, in the form of media deregulation, their butter is on. So the right assumes we manipulate the media in the same fashion they do. If there's something coming you need to hide, provide a distraction. Find big events that will provide media cover which you can control the timing on. The Bush administration used this trick again and again to great advantage.
