Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri grills TV’s Dr. Mehmet Oz over diet fads

Source: Kansas City Star

Mehmet Oz’s enthusiasm for “miracle” weight-loss cures landed the celebrity surgeon in the hot seat Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

Lawmakers grilled him about dubious diet products popularized on his hit TV show.

Oz was in Washington to testify at a hearing on diet scams hosted by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat who chairs a Senate panel on consumer protection.

In sometimes contentious exchanges with McCaskill and other senators on Tuesday, Oz said he’s a victim: He makes no money from any of the treatments touted on The Dr. Oz Show, he said, but unscrupulous advertisers use his words and image to cash in on the latest fat-busting fad.

So if you made "money" you wouldn't show questionable stuff?

Oh please!

And the the idiot politicians...how about tighter regulation, etc. on "supplements"? Start there!

I hadn't seen that site before. Now I've bookmarked it. Thanks for the fun reading, Archae. I saw there that he apparently calls himself America's Doctor. That alone is loony tunes, lunatic lunacy.

which is found in abundance in green coffee bean extract. It has a suppressive effect on glucose-6-phosphatase which is involved in the formation and release of glucose in the liver. This supplement may help the body and decrease inflammation and possibly be of benefit in diabetes although more research is required. I don't think there's any scientific evidence, however, that green coffee bean extract actually brings about weight loss.

Actually, if Dr. Oz touts it, I have to look twice to make sure it isn't some crappy piece of woo.

And if he does tout it, I'm less likely to buy it. Period.

Somebody needs to jerk his license to practice medicine. Whatever he's practicing, it isn't medicine.

For Christ sakes, he supports John of God, the Brazilian kook who apparently specializes in faith healing and psychic surgery, two of the oldest scams in the pseudo-medical universe.

Oz should be stricken off the rolls.

As far as I know he had both an MD and an MBA. I think it was Dr. Phil who had some issues with his credentials.

But he can legally still use "Dr." because of his PhD in psychology...but only in an academic not practical way. As of now, Dr. Phil can be hired as a professor at any university in the world, but he cannot see patients. http://everydaypsychology.com/2008/01/is-dr-phil-actually-psychologist.html

Oh yeah, found this from Wikipedia:

On October 21, 1988, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists determined that McGraw had hired a former patient for "part-time temporary employment".[15] Specifically, the board cited "a possible failure to provide proper separation between termination of therapy and the initiation of employment,"[16] issued a letter of reprimand and imposed administrative penalties.[17] The board also investigated claims made by the patient of inappropriate contact initiated by McGraw, but the "Findings of Fact" document issued by the board on October 21, 1988, at the end of its investigation includes no reference to any physical contact of any kind. It specifically identified "the therapeutic and business relationships" as constituting McGraw's sole issue with the board.[17] McGraw fulfilled all terms of the board's requirements, and the board closed its complaint file in June 1990.[18]

Who has sold his soul to Harpo Productions, AKA Oprah's woo-woo network. Just like Dr. "I was the worst marriage counselor on the planet" Phil, who now does what on TV? That's right... Marriage counseling. Thanks to the monumentally ignorant Oprah Winfrey, who uses her fame and fortune to promote nothing but ignorance. Nice work, Oprah.

She is evil incarnate.
