Turmoil in Iraq is pushing up US gasoline prices

Violence in Iraq is pushing U.S. gasoline prices higher, depriving drivers of the usual price break between Memorial Day and July Fourth.
The national average price of $3.68 per gallon is the highest price for this time of year since 2008, the year gasoline hit its all-time high.
The good news is that gasoline is not likely to spike above $4 as it did 6 years ago. Or even cross $3.90, as in 2011 and 2012.
"You are going to pay a little more than we thought you were going to pay," says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service and GasBuddy.com. "But you are not going to see any apocalyptic numbers."

(520 posts)The US has so much gasoline, we are exporting it to other countries. There is nothing that Iraq can do to affect the supply in the US over any short window of time. The headline should read "Oil companies raise prices, try to distract public as to why." Look for more record profits again this year.

(11,495 posts)4th of July is close, and every year no matter what when a holiday that involves a lot of driving comes up, well so do gas prices. The problems in Iraq just mean they can raise price even more and blame it all on Iraq!

(22,000 posts)I'm coming to the US this summer for a visit and have to drive during part of the trip. If I could do it any other way I would. Unfortunately the place is in BFE so I don't have a choice.

(653 posts)It's $4.29-$4.59 here in Chicago. They jacked it up 12 cents the day before the news about Iraq hit.
