GOP Senator Collins Says She Supports Gay Marriage

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

DAVID SHARP – JUNE 26, 2014, 6:45 AM EDT

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Republican Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday announced her support for gay marriage for the first time after getting an endorsement from the nation's largest LGBT advocacy organization in her bid for re-election.

"A number of states, including my home state of Maine, have now legalized same-sex marriage, and I agree with that decision," the Maine Republican said in a statement issued after several news organizations made inquiries.

Collins joins three other GOP senators who have said they support gay marriage: Illinois' Mark Kirk, Alaska's Lisa Murkowski and Ohio's Rob Portman.

She had been criticized for keeping her view to herself until Wednesday. Campaign spokesman Lance Dutson says she's consistently said the decision rests at the state or local level. She has twice voted against proposed constitutional amendments to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Susan Collins is almost liberal. She has a certain amount of respect from me for at least occasionally being on the right side of some issues. She grew up in the same town I grew up in, went to school with my Mother. Still, she IS a republican, and her policies often reflect that. She is a political enemy, but one of the few that I have any respect for.

She's always happy to carry water for the conservative GOP.

eta: who she is in her public role is all that matters even if privately she says she believes in more moderate stances.

is basically just suggesting that she's not a complete frothing at the mouth hateful idiot. Not saying she's almost actually liberal, just in comparison to extremists like tea party members and such.

her over Shenna Bellows, her Democratic opponent. The HRC has no guarantee that Collins won't immediately go back into hibernation on glbt rights right after the election. Meanwhile, Shenna Bellows has a long history of glbt activism and leadership, as head of Mainers United for Marriage.

ANY LGBT person or organization is going against their own best interest to endorse a republican, period.

She has just left it up to others, and still isn't producing a goddamed bill.

Weakling.
