Meriam Ibrahim: Sudan 'apostasy' woman freed again

Source: BBC

27 June 2014 Last updated at 04:40 GMT

A Sudanese woman whose death sentence for renouncing Islam was overturned has been released from jail again, after she was detained at Khartoum airport on Tuesday.

Meriam Ibrahim's lawyer, Muhannad Mustafa, said that she was currently in the US embassy with her family.

Mrs Ibrahim had been detained on charges of falsifying ID documents.

She was first released on 23 June when an appeals court lifted her death sentence for renouncing Islam.

I would assume that if they stay there until the US can get full and complete permission for them to leave the country, they will at least be safe and well treated.

It is great that the State Department was able to get to this point - in spite of Sudan having poor relations with the US.

smuggle her out of the country if they can't get permission. Sometimes you have to commit a "crime" to do the right and just thing. Get them on American soil, and have the entire family flip off the Sudanese government on live TV. There can't be that much we need from them.
