Parkville man fights for release from state custody

Source: KSHB

The Platte County Public Administrator sought appointment of a guardian and conservator over John Flentie in April 2012. As a result, Flentie cannot drive, vote or take care of himself. The former military intelligence officer has been unable to return to his upscale Parkville home in 27 months.

"I'm fully functional, physically and mentally. I can do anything and everything. I have not felt better in my life than I do now. I'm as good as gold and I don't belong here," he said.

Between 2011 and 2012, Flentie says he blacked out three times within a six-month period. He says when he woke up from these incidents he called for help and was transported a hospital where doctors concluded that he is bipolar and had dementia. With no family and friends able to care for him, the county sent Flentie to several nursing homes and took over his estate that he says is worth about $600,000.

“People like John who have worked their whole life, worked their way up been hard working good honest people who haven't been in trouble with the law or anything we expect that we will be treated fairly, and apparently in Platte County that's not true," attorney Jonathan Sterberg said.

but couldn't one of them be his guardian, at least temporarily, to get him out of the state's clutches?

Apparently the guy is a hoarder.

I have a friend that is a hoarder and it's a big problem. She lives in a house that I will not go into. It is filthy and just full of roaches. And it smells awful. She has roaches so bad that they are in all the electrical stuff. I would just be terrified of a fire.

The condition of her house really affects her life. Just getting simple repairs done is a huge thing. No one wants to go in there to work and some repairmen have said just awful things to her. She gets so humiliated and just feels so awful about the whole thing. But she just seems totally unable to change things. She just hates to throw anything away. She wears clothes until they literally fall off her back. They are all too small and food stained. It's a real mess.

They say it's a form of OCD but I don't think it is. I think it's something different. I have OCD so I understand what it's like I don't think this is it.

I don't know anyway to help because she doesn't want any help.

Do I think the state should step in? No. She is still able to take care of herself. She pays her bills and cooks and makes it to the store and the bank.
