Petition drive to raise Nebraska's minimum wage has over 130,000 signatures

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — A petition drive to raise Nebraska’s minimum wage has collected about 134,800 signatures, which is likely to be enough to put the matter before voters in November.

Organizers turned in the signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office for verification today after spending the last seven weeks gathering them. County officials will begin checking the signatures against voter registration rolls next week.

To make the November ballot, the petition needs valid signatures from 7 percent of registered Nebraska voters, or about 83,000 people. The total must include at least 5 percent of registered voters from each of 38 counties — two-fifths of Nebraska’s 93 counties.

Their proposal would push the state’s minimum wage to $9 per hour in two steps. It would raise the minimum wage to $8 an hour for 2015, with the next step kicking in on Jan. 1, 2016.

That might help motivate the traditional non-responsive mid-term voting electorate to GOTV.

I think that the minimum wage issue would be a great way to get people out to vote, and vote for the candidate that actually wants to see a higher minimum wage, not some republican that will fight tooth and nail to prevent the minimum wage from going up.

Democrats in every state that has low minimum wages need to start working on getting this issue on the ballots in November. I think it would be a winner for democrats, especially when they debate the republican running against them.
