KC area mom learns Illinois keeping custody of her son

Source: KC Star

Rider took Isaiah, 16, to Chicago earlier this year for treatment of neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition in which tumors develop on nerves throughout the body.

In mid-April, she discussed transferring her son — who has had chronic medical history since he injured his leg when he was 6 — from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital to a hospital in another state. That’s when the hospital reported her for medical child abuse, she says, and her son was placed in temporary protective custody.

Among the hospital’s allegations: Rider moved her son from hospital to hospital in several states. She didn’t agree with doctors’ advice. And she insisted on pain medication for her son, who had part of one leg amputated in 2012. Staff members reportedly said the pain lessened when the mother wasn’t around.

A 16 year old can be emancipated. And yet, they are holding him prisoner. Why?

Children don't have a say about where they will live if they are being abused or neglected. Based on the circumstances mentioned in the article, I expect those are the circumstances under which they are keeping the child in Illinois.

I cannot imagine any court emancipating a 16yo who is unwell and cannot take care of himself. I cannot imagine them absolving his parents of providing for his care, either, which would be the consequence of such an action.

I missed the part in the article where they said the boy is being held prisoner. I would look on such a claim skeptically. As we have seen here in recent posts, the media rarely gets all the details right and certainly aren't above playing on readers' emotions to sell their swill.

Here is a better article that explains what's going on. I knew a woman who did this to her children. It's a real illness and it causes untold harm.
