McDonnells Shared $5,000 Cognac, Favor Seeker Testifies
By Andrew Zajac and Peter Galuszka Jul 31, 2014 8:26 PM CT
Businessman Jonnie Williams told a Virginia jury he lubricated his early relationship with the states governor-elect Robert McDonnell and his wife with a $5,000 bottle of Louis XIII cognac.
The high-priced spirit, shared in December 2009 as they prepared for McDonnells inauguration, presaged a steady stream of luxury gifts that federal prosecutors allege corrupted the the couple, leading them to illegally lend the prestige and power of the governors office to Williams and his push to promote a dietary supplement.
The McDonnells repeatedly solicited gifts as they helped with his marketing plans for an anti-inflammatory called Anatabloc, Williams said today in his second day testifying in the couples public corruption trial in federal court in Richmond, Virginia.
Maureen McDonnell asked for a Rolex watch, which Williams said he produced, and a Range Rover sport utility vehicle, which he declined to buy. He worried that his gift-giving was illegal, he said, yet continued because it was good for my business.

(10,495 posts)as a public service, we could bust the crooked ones like this greedy idiot and stop the vast majority of influence peddling that is ruining our country. This goes on every day in Washington, but most of it is legal. Cantor pushed through a bi-partisan bill that allows the Congressmen and their significant others to fly on private planes, stay in hotels, fancy meals, etc., from anonymous people/corporations legally. No Quid Pro Quo of course, at least as far as Justice Roberts is concerned. It's unthinkable that this could influence a politician's vote or give anyone special access that you or I couldn't have!
(Sarcasm)
If you are tired of this shit too, lets protest this Fall during the heat of the midterm elections to
GET THE MONEY OUT OF OUR ELECTIONS!!!!!!
Sept 13th - Nov 4th and beyond let's protest outside your local TV and Radio stations. Demand Publicly Funded Elections! This will stop the endless fund raising (bribery) and allow the politicians to be responsible to voters again, otherwise things will continue to go the way the 1% wants! not us!
Now is the time for action that can make a difference and at least change the conversation. If they have to start disclosing where all the money comes from and who it goes to that will be a great 1st step! SPREAD THE WORD!!!

(1,397 posts)One of the gifts Jonnie Williams gave Governor Gimme was a $6,700 Rolex. Reports are that Ms. Governor Gimme was impressed by Williams' Rolex, asked about it, so Jonnie bought one like his, had it engraved, and gave it to Mrs. to give to Mr. Governor.
HOWEVER -- recent Washington Post reports quote one of the McDonnell sons as saying the Rolex was a fake that Williams purchased in Hong Kong.
If this turns out to be true, I'll be ROTFLAMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meanwhile . . . I wear an old Rolex GMT-Master that I purchased for $196 at the Army-Air Force Exchange, Bien Hoa, Vietnam, in February 1970 as I was on my way out of Vietnam at the end of my second tour there. I send the watch back to Rolex NY for service every 8-10 years. I sent it back on January 2014 -- they had me insure it for $9,000!!!!! At $6,700, I'd say Jonnie Williams got off cheap.

Can't even sit down and persuade his wife to get some help for her addictive shopping mania. Are these people stupid or what? I'll let you folks decide which of them is Dumb and Dumber.

I think both the McDonnells were happy to spend, spend, spend... as long as it wasn't their own money.
Those two deserve each other and whatever punishment they receive (let's hope there is some) will have been earned in a joint partnership of greediness.
