Suspect in fatal USC attack entered country illegally, feds say

Source: LA Times

A 19-year-old charged with murder in connection with last week's fatal assault on a USC graduate student told immigration officials that he entered the country illegally about seven years ago, a federal official said.

The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said Jonathan DelCarmen made the comments during an interview at a Los Angeles County jail where he is being held in connection with the death of Xinran Ji, 24.

A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that an immigration detainer had been placed against DelCarmen. In a statement, spokeswoman Virginia Kice said ICE officials contacted DelCarmen at the jail Wednesday.

"ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against Mr. DelCarmen requesting that the Sheriff's Department turn him over to ICE for possible follow-up immigration enforcement action if and when he is released from local custody," Kice said.

I'm not too sure what his immigration status had to do with his propensity for violent crime. Maybe we can learn some other facts about him.

Was he breastfed?

Had he ever eaten at an Olive Garden?

Expect this DelCarmen guy to become a right wing anti-drug/anti-immigration symbol. As if right wingers aren't giving Obama a hard enough time. The right will hype this case all the way til november.

But in general, I think Olive Garden isn't quality food, and breastfeeding is better.

Doesn't this work out in right winger moral trigonometry as something of a wash, since the victim was a communist atheist?

I just can't see them saying, "Well heckfire, Clem, the furriners are making this country unsafe for other furriners."

And don't give me that crap about how they are doing the jobs Americans won't do. We've got plenty of murderers just looking for an opportunity. We practically invented senseless murder, and are a world leader at it.

Safety concerns Chinese communities in US

By Chang Jun - 2014-07-30

Chinese communities throughout the United State were saddened by the deaths last week of a 24-year-old Chinese graduate student at the University of Southern California (USC), who was beaten on his way to his apartment and died there, and a 59-year-old Chinese research professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) after being mugged during his lunchtime walk on a street.

The two tragedies have stirred a heated debate among Asian Americans on a number of topics, including safety and security concerns for Chinese immigrants, nurturing a healthy society with zero tolerance for speech that is full of hatred or prejudice in any disguise, gun control and understanding the causes of crime.

First and foremost, the Chinese community should stay alert and vigilant toward any criminal attempts against it, said Yibing He, a media commentator in San Francisco. "In recent years, we have cried too many times over losses of young lives. We need to be more sensitive to our safety and security and make sure we Asian Americans won't be easy target for crimes," she said...

In April 2012, Chinese graduate students Wu Ying and Qu Ming, both 23 and majoring in electric engineering at USC, were shot dead during a botched robbery just several blocks away off campus.

In May of this year, three young men from Chinese immigrant families were killed by Elliot Rodger during his killing rampage in the Isla Vista neighborhood at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Weihan "David" Wang, Cheng Yuan "James" Hong and George Chen were from the San Francisco Bay Area; all were studying computer science, and all were stabbed to death at the apartment they shared with Rodger. Rodger killed three other people and injured 13 before committing suicide...

Immigration status is likely being brought into this story since the 19-year-old has rights as a foreign national, and will get help from his native country.

The debate on 'nurturing a healthy society with zero tolerance for speech that is full of hatred or prejudice in any disguise, gun control and understanding the causes of crime' is very encouraging. There has not been a wise debate on this in America for a long time, too much knee-jerk reactions and simplification.

This brilliant young man had a lot in life to look forward to and accomplish. His family must be utterly devastated.
