Gaza conflict Ceasefire crumbles as Israeli, Hamas trade fire hours after agreed 72-hour truce began
Source: ABC
The Israeli military has told people in the Gaza Strip it is resuming operations in the Palestinian territory after armed groups "flagrantly violated" an agreed ceasefire.
The Palestinian Interior Ministry says Israeli shelling near the southern Gaza town of Rafah killed at least 25 people, while hospital workers near the town put the death toll at 40.
Israel has accused Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups of violating the US and UN-mediated truce, but did not elaborate, amid Israeli media reports that gunmen had fired at Israeli soldiers in the Rafah area.
An official in Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip had "flagrantly violated the ceasefire".

Israel kills 4 despite ceasefire, after 16 killed in hours before
Published today (updated) 01/08/2014 13:00
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Four Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces on Friday, only hours after a 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect.
Ahmad Muhammad Hasanein, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in eastern Gaza City, while the bodies of Bassel Diab al-Bsyuni, 37, and an unidentified man were brought to Kamal Adwan hospital as a result of Israeli fire.
Shadi Muhammad Jumaa Abu Daher, 29, from al-Mughraqa, was also killed by Israeli fire.
A Ma'an correspondent in Gaza said that three were wounded after Israeli artillery fired several shells east of Rafah, in what appears to have been the first violation of the ceasefire by Israeli forces about two hours in.
In the eastern Gaza Strip, meanwhile, Israeli soldiers opened fire on Palestinian civilians who attempted to reach their homes in areas near the border.
After the Israeli attacks, sirens were heard at the Kerem Shalom border crossing with Israel, presumably as Palestinian militants fired rockets in response to the alleged Israeli violation.
Before the 72-hour ceasefire came into effect at 8 a.m., Israeli shelling on the Gaza Strip had already killed 16 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip since midnight.
The deaths brought the total since the beginning of the offensive to 1,461 and more than 8,400 injured, after hopes were raised that the three-day break in fighting could lead to a long-term end to Israel's 24-day assault that has displaced around 400,000 people, or 1 in 4 Gazans.
The ceasefire was announced early Friday by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who said that although forces would stay in place on the ground, the ceasefire was "critical" to giving civilians a "reprieve from the violence."

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Friday that at least 27 Palestinians had been killed and more than 200 injured in Israeli shelling and airstrikes on Rafah that took place after intense clashes broke out east of the city.
The ministry stressed that ambulances and medical crews are not able to enter the areas under attack, and that all means of communications had been cut off in the area.

(101,321 posts)The Israeli military had no immediate comment but media reports said the shelling began after Hamas fighters exchanged fire with Israeli soldiers on a mission to destroy infiltration tunnels.
Eight rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza at Israel, the military said, adding that one was intercepted by the Iron Dome system and seven hit open areas.

(8,554 posts)according to what they saw. He said all was quiet as they were watching Israeli tanks maneuvering, then they suddenly began shelling.
It's the Aussie on CNN, Karl Penhaul; he even had video.
Now Regev is on there scrambling to do damage control with Wolfie. So much doublespeak, if it wasn't so sad and outrageous, it'd be funny.
35 more Palestinians killed now, more than one hundred wounded, 3 hours after the ceasefire began this morning.
IDF now reporting that an Israeli soldier has been taken prisoner. His family has been notified. Two other IDF soldiers killed.
Heavy shelling happening now down at Rafah.
Shit is about to hit the fan within the next few hours. The ceasefire is over.
Israeli soldiers were clearing a tunnel when they cornered two Hamas fighters. One of them detonated a suicide bomb. This happened one and a half hours into the ceasefire.

However, there does appear to have been a bug in the ceasefire agreement from the start, since Israel apparently felt no compulsion to stop destroying Hamas tunnels. Think what you will of Hamas, it's very hard to imagine them just sitting back for three days and letting that proceed.

(35,317 posts)I mean, it didn't film the entirety of the border for the 30 or 60 minutes before the tanks began shelling. So his video can't show that there was nothing that preceded it. His evidence doesn't entail his conclusion.
In fact, if a mortar round or 5 hit Israel, the response might be fired from a mile away. If there was gunfire exchange and he didn't hear or notice the gunfire he might easily not see or film it. All he'd see was the reaction and not the initial action, and either foolishly assume that what he saw is all there is or let his viewers make the assumption. It's a common human failing. It's hard to take into account what you don't know; it's hard to imagine likely things that would change the context for what you do know. It's very hard to even think to do these things when you already know the conclusion you want to reach because it confirms what you already think or believe.

(487 posts)Israel did not not violate the cease fire hamas did and in case you are not keeping count, that is now SIX cease fires that hamas has violated. An hour into the ceasefire hamas terrorists come through a terror tunnel build with money for hospitals and schools and kidnap an Israeli soldier.
There is only one way this stops forever and that is the elimination of hamas. That will free the Palestinian people from their war lords.

(13,184 posts)Israel To Pay Students For Pro-Israeli Social Media Propaganda
The Huffington Post UK | By Lucy Sherriff

Israel has announced it will pay university students to circulate pro-Israeli information on social media networks, without having to identify themselves as working for the government.
The move was publicised in a statement from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the Associated Press reported. Students will receive scholarships to "engage international audiences online" and combat anti-Semitism and calls to boycott Israel, it was alleged.
In 2012, a Palestinian-run blog reported similar arrangements between the National Union of Israeli Students and the Israeli government. Students would be paid $2,000 to post pro-Israel messages online for five hours a week.
According to Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz, the most recent proposition is being spearheaded by Danny Seaman, who was slammed by the media for writing anti-Muslim messages on Facebook.
Students will be organised into units at each university, with a chief co-ordinator who receives a full scholarship, three desk co-ordinators for language, graphics and research who receive lesser scholarships and students termed activists who will receive a minimal scholarship, the Independent reported.

UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon was incensed yesterday at the deaths of at least 15 Palestinians among thousands sheltering at a school whose UN administrator said appeared to have been hit by Israeli artillery.
It is outrageous. It is unjustifiable. And it demands accountability and justice, Mr Ban said.

(34,825 posts)U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon leveled his strongest criticism yet of Israel's military operation in Gaza on Monday, accusing Israel of "pummeling" Gazans with "indiscriminate destruction" and warning Israel to fulfill its obligations as an "occupying power" to protect civilians.
Mr. Ban stopped short of accusing Israel of targeting civilians, but he said that "every home, every school, every refuge" had become a target.
He told reporters in New York that the Israeli bombardment had raised questions of the "proportionality" of Israel's military operation.
"The people of Gaza have nowhere to run," Mr. Ban said. "They are trapped, besieged on a speck of land. Every area is a civilian area. Every home, every school, every refuge has become a target. The causalities and damage raises serious concerns about proportionality."

(13,485 posts)I just heard one on NPR one on CNN one I read in AlJazeera, and ones here in this thread.
I am not getting into a news fight. The information conflicts so I would suggest we stand back and keep reading ALL reliable sources till someone gets it as right as we can possibly know. Anything else would be spreading a subjective point of view.
Right now, it seems people are fighting about news sources rather than have information that allows an argument of the conflict, because there is no objective position available.... yet.
