America's Fed Up: Obama Approval Rating Hits All-Time Low, Poll Shows

Source: NBCNews

Six in 10 Americans are dissatisfied with the state of the U.S. economy, more than 70 percent believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, and nearly 80 percent are down on the country’s political system, according to the latest NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll.

The frustration carries over to the nation’s political leaders, with President Barack Obama’s overall approval rating hitting a new low at 40 percent, and a mere 14 percent of the public giving Congress a thumbs up.

Yet because this discontent differs – among Democrats, Republicans, and independents – Hart cautions that Americans still aren't likely to be storming the polls on Election Day in November.

Indeed, 57 percent of respondents told pollsters that something upsets them enough to carry a protest sign for a day.

So, something upsets them enough to carry a protest sign for a day, but they're not upset enough to actually go out and vote?

I'm losing faith in the electorate. They're a bunch of cry-baby dumbasses. GET OUT AND VOTE ASSHOLES!!!

At least Obama has a 2.5 times higher approval rating than congress!

Wed Aug 6, 2014, 11:34 PM
Aug 2014

and my real work load is now almost double what it was 6 years ago, while my colleagues are dropping like flies as their jobs go to India.

Now, as I am working my ass off for less money and fewer benefits and civil rights, my only hope is that there is a political process that agrees with the principals I have no longer have any time to fight for. A few of these are as follows:

- torture is wrong and should be punished to send a strong message that abuse will not be tolerated in future.

- wall street crime is wrong and should be punished to send a strong message that abuse will not be tolerated in future.

- H1Bs and trade agreements are killing the US workforce, replacing American workers with compliant, low wage labor without workplace protections.

- 100% reliance on corporate influence for legislative polices

- etc, etc, etc

But for me to say I am a Democrat, it means I have to give up these principals and am not permitted to express horror at the direction of the party as it moves further and further away from these principals because... let me be clear

BECAUSE IF I DO EXPRESS HORROR AT THE SHIT POLICIES OF THE CORPORATE DEMOCRATICS, SOME HALL MONITOR FROM THE SAFETY PATROL CALLS ME A TROLL BECAUSE REAL DEMOCRATS CANNOT POSSIBLY HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AS IT EXISTS TODAY WHICH IS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER FOR AMERICA THAN THAT OLD SHITTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF FDR.

So, you see, I am paying attention. A lot of us are paying attention. We are watching winning an election become more important than challenging our corporate masters and improving the quality of life for the other 99%.

So being a Democrat means I have to support torture, spying, accept that rich corporations and corrupt institutions will never be held accountable for criminal activity.

But on abortion and gay rights, Democrats are still on the right side of things. So, as a Democrat I am expected to fight for those things. Meanwhile, the cost of raising a family is to the point where only the rich can really afford it.

Yes, I am paying attention, watching the Democratic Party move farther and farther away from the middle class and below.

Wed Aug 6, 2014, 12:58 PM
Aug 2014

Remember, the disapproval includes both roughly 50 percent Republicans, who completely don't like him, and the rest 8-9% of liberals, who are dissatisfied with his conservative positions on issues, his tax cuts for the rich, him making inheritance taxes permanent, and his corporate appointments to cabinet positions, and just his general lack of liberal policies. So there is that.

AND even more, or at least just as important, the media reports on his approval rating, and the media CREATES his approval rating. This is another case of the media reporting on something they helped create, much like the war in Iraq, that MSNBC now pretends to have been completely against, when other than Donahue, they were all jumping right into it before it began.

It's kind of disingenuous to basically say "Look, his approval rate is low," when you know you are responsible for making it so low, don't you think?

...but neither should you reflexively "distrust" NBC because "we all know" they're part of "corporate media".

Perhaps instead you should actually research the polling, which took all of 10 minutes. Hart Research is run by Peter Hart, who been a Democratic supporter for years.

Perhaps. as well, you should ask if the findings are consistent with other data. Are you of the opinion that President Obama IS phenomenally popular and that the electorate is happy with where the country is going? I haven't seen any sign of that in awhile. I don't dispute that most of the blame falls on House Republicans, but the average voter looks at Washington and doesn't see the distinction.

Wed Aug 6, 2014, 10:48 AM

they're not seeing things clearly.

Even if you live in a red, red state, where the Democrat has to espouse pretty conservative policies, the whiney-baby T & T argument still doesn't hold: that conservadem contributes to the majority, and holding the majority in either or both the Senate and House is a Big Effing Deal, and makes a real difference.

I used to do a lot of door-to-door canvassing, and the most annoying people were the ones who'd open the door and say, "I'm not voting; it won't make a difference"; or "All the politicians are the same"; or "None of them is going to do anything that I need" (usually something completely stupid that politicians have no control over anyway). These people always had the air of deadbeats, and I'd thank them and then say to myself I'm glad they're not voting.

So continue with the boring Tweedledum defense, but it's a copout. Nothing will ever happen with that attitude.

It seems to me that is exactly the type of person you should be looking for, not the ones that will agree with you that R bad D good...they will probably vote unless some liberal pisses them off...and you will never convince the Conservative at all.

But that is the problem as I see it...we write off the south and give it to the GOP...and never run a democrat that offers a populist message that the "deadbeats" may just like.
We are not playing to win but to hold the line.

But look at from the "deadbeats" POV...we elected a president that promised change and hope...and we got neither...so why should they care about Democrats?

Believe me, it will change your view of a lot of things, especially the issues people really care about, which are in general very bread and butter, sometimes very poignant: health care, jobs, etc.

The "deadbeats" I was talking of were people who told me they wouldn't vote because, for example, no politician could help their problem, which was getting their kid to stop listening to rap music (I agreed with him that they couldn't and wouldn't, d'oh, but spent 45 minutes talking to him about education issues and the role of government in general); or another because his ex-wife wouldn't let him see their son enough (WTF? He just didn't get anything at all, and yet still--unlike most of the posters here, who are pontificating about getting people riled up--I actually spent time with this man, trying to gently lure him into the idea of becoming engaged with the voting public as a way to improve his [sad] life; it was hopeless.)

The chasm between real life versus writing on the Internet is vast. If you want to effect change you need to actually connect with the people who need changing. I've done that--volunteered hundreds of hours, walked hundreds of blocks, and driven hundreds of miles to do it. Have you?

zeemike

(18,998 posts)
52. Well I am not able to do that.
Wed Aug 6, 2014, 08:12 PM
Aug 2014

But I did what I could to get Obama elected the first time, which may not be as much as you did...and the change I thought would happen never did.

And you have to understand that there are others that see it that way too...they wanted real change and did not get it. So you are a salesman trying to sell something that people have gotten burned on before...so don't be surprised to get the dore slammed on your foot.
And even if they talk to you what do you have to sell them?...more of the wishy washy promises of a politician?....or fear of the bad cop?

If you don't have a product people trust you will find few takers...and trust has been badly eroded in this country...and Democrats have played their role in it, just by letting the right wingers get buy with all kinds of shit and not standing on principles.

But good luck to you, and I wish I was able to do what you are doing.

But ... until then, or the aliens land, it will always be more of the same. It is a pain in the ass to run a Democracy but the people just do not want to do it. So many simple things that if done, in mass, would end the madness.

I will vote, but until almost everyone else votes with me I am under no delusions either. However, as we saw in 2010, NOT voting is like taking away the dike. Right now, all we can do is hold things at bay for as long as we can in the hopes that others will realize that the Matrix is not the place they really want to be.

I usually don't have faith in polls, but I think this President has done a fantastic job with what he has been given...

Well, that's too damn bad. We are getting exactly what we deserve as long as we keep voting Republicans into office.

I think the electorate is sort of flailing around impulsively swinging back and forth.

What we are seeing right now in the US is really the culmination of a 30 year trend of globalization and conservative politics.

30 years of right wing messaging has made the democrats and the word "liberal" somewhat distasteful to the voters, yet they have swung for them every time that the GOP really screwed it up.

The economy is recovering, but every time the economy has recovered from Reagan on there's more part time, less benefits and lower pay.

People see one family living under one roof, secure retirement, and free time getting less and less even though the economy is gettin better.

I don't see congress or the president looking any better till we get peoples wages and benefits up, yet, yet "unions" are still a dirty word to a lot of the people complaining and any gov't help is branded "socialisim"

I believe that conservative, and free trade policies have failed and we need a new economic populisim and patriotisim but no president has yet to present this in a form that the public can understand.

It's hard to think things are swell while realizing you'll never retire.

out of Control" all fox "news" shit..

From your link, SM..

•“Impeach Obama,” said a female Republican from Ohio.

•“Republicans and Congress, do your job,” countered a male Democrat from Kentucky.

•“Close the borders,” added a Republican-leaning female from Massachusetts.

•“Stop bombing people in Ukraine and Gaza and Israel,” said a male Democrat from Texas.

•“Our government needs an overhaul,” said a female independent from Florida.

All bullshit from Bullshit Mountain except the Dem from Kentucky seems to be living in reality.. and NBC is reporting it like it means something. Designed to Discourage.. how they doin?

P.S. Where the hell is the male Dem from Texas getting his news?

So, it's surprising to me that his numbers are still even close to the 40's.

I mean, I didn't think anyone would still approve of him after he couldn't even stop the Sharknado.
