Putin orders import limits over sanctions

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin has ordered government agencies to restrict imports of food and agricultural products from the countries that have imposed sanctions against Russia.

The text of Putin’s decree released by the Kremlin on Wednesday says that such imports will be “banned or limited” for one year. The decree doesn’t name any specific countries or products, but contains an order to government agencies to spell them out.

The move follows the latest round of sanctions against Russia imposed by the European Union last week, which for the first time targeted entire sectors of Russian economy.

"Many Russians stranded as tour firm Labirint fails"

Sunny Beach, Bulgaria: The country's Black Sea coast is popular with Russians

As many as 27,000 Russian tourists are stranded abroad after a Russian tour firm, Labirint, suspended operations.

A company statement (in Russian) blamed the move on a deterioration in the rouble exchange rate and the "negative political and economic situation".

There are signs that EU-US sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis are hurting the wider economy, including Western investment in Russia.

A Russian tycoon says his executive jet is grounded because of US sanctions. Billionaire businessman Gennady Timchenko - close to President Vladimir Putin - told Russia's Itar-Tass news agency (in Russian) that Gulfstream was no longer servicing his jet and the pilots were not allowed to use its navigation equipment.

Anxious Labirint customers are bombarding Turpomoshch with calls at a rate of five per minute, the agency says, adding that "our managers are working flat-out" to help them. ...... Last month another Russian tour operator, Neva, also went bust.

The sanctions are a part of PNAC strategy supported by right wing "Americal exceptionalism" doctrine supported by Kristol, Wolfowitz, Cheney and Rumsfeld.

Glad to know who you are supporting.

While earlier sanctions accelerated Russian capital flight to $75 billion, business leaders who were affected by the punitive measures refused to speak out — perhaps fearing that criticizing Putin could cause more harm to their companies than the sanctions themselves.

The shooting down of the Malaysia Airlines jet — and Russia’s refusal to admit culpability — hardened European leaders’ resolve to expand the sanctions. They now include energy, which provides more than a half of Russia’s revenues, and banking, making it more difficult for Russian companies to borrow.

Russia’s economy is now teetering on the brink of recession. The retaliatory measures it has enacted could push it over the edge. Banning cheap import products from Europe could make it harder to control inflation, the Russian central bank warned on Tuesday.

The annual inflation rate fell to 7.5 percent in July, still well above the 6.5 percent increase seen in 2013.
