Bold Obama Stand Shakes Up Net Neutrality Debate
Source: Huffington Post
....................
Obama campaigned heavily on net neutrality during his 2008 election, but has been largely silent on the issue since the FCC voted to kill it with new Internet service rules that would create "fast lanes" for content providers that can afford to pay for them; those that can't will be hit with slower traffic.
Obama echoed one of progressives' major criticisms of the new rules at the U.S. Africa Business Forum in Washington on Wednesday, saying he is in favor of "an open and fair Internet."
"One of the issues around net neutrality is whether you are creating different rates or charges for different content providers. Thats the big controversy here," he said. "You have big, wealthy media companies who might be willing to pay more but then also charge more for more spectrum, more bandwidth on the Internet so they can stream movies faster or what have you. And I personally -- the position of my administration, as well as I think a lot of companies here is you dont want to start getting a differentiation in how accessible the Internet is to various users."
The president said an open Internet will allow for "the next Google or the next Facebook" to enter the arena, and succeed.

(11,417 posts)He did that in 2008 and 2012. It is actions that matter not bold statements.
I'm agreeing with that. Let's hope the actions match the "moment" - "You do the talk - you do the walk."

He was for the public option before he caved on it.
He is right though. An open society and an open not-for-sale-to-the-highest-bidder internet are vital to keep capitalism alive.
When the marketplace is closed off to new products and ideas because the companies that sell the old products and ideas hog the space, that's not robust capitalism. That's monopolization of the economy, and it does not lead to growth.

There is no room to compromise on net neutrality. You either have it or you don't. We should have universal broadband at the very least across the country.

(27,461 posts)nor does he mention Tom Wheeler, whom Obama appointed and whose killing net neutrality was completely predictable.
he leaves it up to Huffington Post to imagine that he opposes the FCC plan, without having to actually say it. And then when it turns out he supports the FCC plan, Huffington Post must have imagined wrong, and anyone who believed them was looking for a pony.

(53,475 posts)... it comes to open internet. The real problem is censorship of dissenting opinions. When fox dot com runs at 15GB and DU runs at 360K we won't be worried about movies.

(45,251 posts)I'll tell you what though: If you are really for open internet, you don't staff the FCC, esp. at the top and in the legal dept., with industry lobbyists. You don't ignore SCOTUS decisions saying you have to reclassify the industry to carriers if you want to refulate them heavily. And you don't give the industry the go ahead to create tiers.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)Now he claims he disagrees with the stand Wheeler is taking (a stand some predicted he'd take) and yet is powerless to effect the decision. The President has been quick to fire those that have gotten into trouble with conservatives, but for some reason, he can't seem to fire Gen Clapper, John Brennan, Arnie Duncan, and now Wheeler.
I am sorry Mr. President, until I see some results, I will assume this speech is so much rhetoric.

Lies upon lies. It's an election season.
A pattern of election year speeches brazenly misrepresenting his administration's own behavior.
Weeks ago: that heavily publicized speech about reining in military involvement...followed immediately by escalations and funding of the Gaza horror.
Yesterday: the shameless claim to support net neutrality, when his own appointees are enabling corporate takeover of the internet.
And today's obscene lie about defending whistleblowers, when we have all witnessed this administration's treatment of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, and the systematic crackdown on whistleblowing in the federal government.
War is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength.
Torturers are Patriots.

(32,139 posts)The FCC *could* have begun the process of reclassifying the internet as a public utility a year ago. They chose not to, just as Obama chose to appoint an FCC Chairman in bed with telecoms. Why make those choices? Stay tuned...
If we have learned anything from this Wall Street/Madison Avenue, corporate Trojan horse of an administration, it is not to cheer shiny PR announcements of accomplishments on behalf of the people until AFTER the actual policies are signed, sealed, and delivered.
True to form, the publicity blitz and bids for cheering happen NOW, before anything is certain.
This administration has perfected the dishonest PR strategy of claiming loudly and publicly that they intend to do something and gaining the PR benefits of the announcement, but then quietly turning around and doing the opposite. They did it with ACA and a public option. They did it with that beautiful speech about reining in the MIC, followed immediately by two new major wars and a TRILLION dollar ramping up of nuclear arms. They did it with Obama's despicable speeches claiming to support whistleblowers, although Chelsea Manning was a victim of torture and Edward Snowden pursued by forcing down the plane of a head of state. They did it when they promised that big banks would be under indictment in the fall of 2013.
All lies. Publicize and seek credit for lying intentions, but then claim something went wrong.
Americans need to wait and see, thank you very much.
