APNewsBreak: LA woman punched by patrolman speaks
By TAMI ABDOLLAH, Associated Press | August 11, 2014 | Updated: August 11, 2014 1:16am
LOS ANGELES (AP) The woman whose videotaped beating by a California Highway Patrol officer sparked outrage says she believes the officer was trying to kill her.
In her first public comments since the July 1 beating on the side of a Los Angeles freeway, Marlene Pinnock recalled being repeatedly punched in the head while being pinned by the officer.
"He grabbed me, he threw me down, he started beating me, he beat me. I felt like he was trying to kill me, beat me to death," Pinnock told The Associated Press on Sunday.
Pinnock, 51, was released from the hospital last week after several weeks of treatment for head injuries and now slurs her speech, her attorney Caree Harper said.
Pinnock is suing CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow and Officer Daniel L. Andrew in federal court for civil rights violations. The lawsuit claims excessive force, assault, battery and a violation of her due-process rights. The CHP hasn't identified the officer, but the agency said he had been on the job for 1 1/2 years and is on desk duty pending completion of the internal investigation.

(27,137 posts)His incompetence is the only reason he failed.
He was probably lousy soldier too.
That animal should not be wearing a uniform.
- He should be wearing a cage.

(12,447 posts)You know, I believe we are seeing a pattern with fresh ex military becoming law enforcement officers and the urge to use excessive force without provocation.
DeSwiss
(27,137 posts)...hell, CHP wouldn't even give his name out. We only know it because of the FEDERAL lawsuit. But I've seen pictures of those punches before.
- In Iraq. He's one of our walking wounded. The ones we teach that to have a good life you have to learn to kill.
He's punching himself......

(22,651 posts)""Appearing in court for a bond hearing Thursday, Gregg argued for a lower bond on the grounds that he is studying to become a police officer. Gregg is a student at Columbus State Community College.
"I'm actually in a law-enforcement program because I have been a police officer, so I have exams," Gregg said. "I know those charges are pretty serious, but if I don't show up for those exams I'll be in more financial ruins 'cause I don't have a job now."
Conklin Dairy Farms of Union County fired Gregg Wednesday. He faces nearly three years in prison if convicted of all 12 counts of animal cruelty. The charges are second-degree misdemeanors.""
And so, in the end this man (a Veteran) did have a few misdemeanor convictions. He's probably a police officer today.
warning , do NOT click on the below link and watch the video. Extremely violent animal abuse.

(50,983 posts)I don't care how bad a day the officer was having.
I don't care if the woman did not obey his commands.
No justification.
The guy should never work in law enforcement again.

(19,926 posts)to be mentally scarred for life. From an intentional beating. By law enforcement. Otoh, maybe people who saw the beat down will be mentally scarred for life as well.
Why are you placing so little importance on her experience? Both of your posts are painting her as the wrongdoer here. I don't get it.

(45,251 posts)Too bad he had to beat the shit of the actual woman to do it.
She's lying there with her hands trying to protect her head. What are you seeing?

(21,115 posts)she is over 50 and has head and additionally, potential neck and spine injuries as well.....that she will likely never overcome completely. As someone who is suffering due to spinal injuries in my middle age....and who now has significant spinal arthritis....having spent the remaining years in and out of physical therapy and shots of cortisones multiple multiple visits to orthopedic doctors and chiropractic treatments ongoing actually heard the words recently "quality of life".....I can tell you that first hand.....beating someone like that at that age can mean she is suffering pain for the rest of her life. All it took was one rear end accident to for it to put me in lifelong pain.....no one should dismiss this beating so lightly.

(55,981 posts)actions. It appears you are trying to rationalize if not justify the policeman's actions. If that isn't the case, just tell us what you feel.

(45,251 posts)In the private sector, you sue the wrongdoer and the employer, on the theory that the employer is usually responsible for what the employee does in the course of doing his or her job.
If they all paid, you'd see how fast this would diminish.
NutmegYankee
(16,201 posts)To sustain the suit, the victim must prove that the officer knowingly violated their civil rights.

(45,251 posts)jury did not get mesmerized by the defense, as they seem to in most of these cases.
However, my post was saying what I think should be the law, not what current law is.

(362 posts)That's how bad it seems to be getting.
And you can't even speak out, for fear you'll be harassed and beaten yourself. Look at what happened to the man who filmed that cop choking that guy to death.

(6,390 posts)Marlene spoke a universal truth when she said "thank goodness a motorist stopped to video the incident or it would just be my word versus the police".
We all know how that would go.
Hell - even with the video, you know someone somewhere is going to try and position her as "the aggressor".
