A cruise ship carrying 1,001 people is adrift south of the Philippines after a fire disabled its engines, the Philippine coast guard says.

Five crew were injured in the fire, which broke out on Friday, a day after the ship left Manila for Sandakan, Malaysia.

None of the passengers was injured, according to the ship's operator, Azamara Club Cruises.

The ship is owned by the world's second largest cruise firm, Royal Caribbean.

cruise lines take maintenance very seriously since a relatively minor fault can put a cruise ship off hire which is much more expensive than the money they would save by taking shortcuts. In addition, catch up work costs about 3 times as much as regular maintenance.

But even the best maintenance does not insure 100% reliability.

These ships are nothing more than floating shopping malls, and unsafe too. I would rather fly to a destination and start enjoying a vacation rather than be subjected for days of corporate marketing.
