The California quake was just under 7 miles down.
Makes a big difference. In related news, there was a 5.3 very close to that volcano in Iceland that's erupting under a glacier. Things might be getting interesting there.

Earthquakes are essentially the way the earth relieves stress between masses.
How exactly the worldwide surge of fracking will affect that is unknown. I guess we may find out?
