MSNBC’s Chris Hayes challenges senators who harassed Kirsten Gillibrand to come forward
By Arturo Garcia

MSNBC Chris Hayes called out the lawmakers who allegedly harassed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to reveal themselves during a panel discussion on Friday regarding the culture of sexual harassment permeating the Capitol, which he called the “worst-kept secret in Washington.”

“I challenge the male senators — if they’re still alive, we don’t know if they are,” Hayes said. “But if you are, then you should come out and say that you did that, and you should apologize.”

Gillibrand has been criticized in some press circles for writing in her upcoming autobiography that unidentified male colleagues who told her to not get “porky” or that they preferred her to look “chubby,” though some female journalists have come forward to back up her account.

However, National Journal reporter Lucia Graves said, Gillibrand had no desirable options in the situation.

She's already said some were Democrats that she works closely with. Liked, even, except for the odd comment.

And, there are no doubt a few Republicans that she might have a chance to deal with if she doesn't out them.

When you get into the big leagues, life is never simply black and white.

She is the one that is pushing all of this in legislation. She needs to stand up and put them on the defensive. If that actually happened and I have no reason to believe it did not. It is wrong and at the very least a complaint needs to be filed against them. They really need to be exposed and have to explain that behavior. I think she would be much stronger for it myself.

Relationships and dealings in DC are tough enough without adding gossipy stuff to the mix. Frankly, I'm surprised she brought it up at all (but not that much).

almost monthly mandatory training on this and I have never had a complaint. When not confronted and stopped it will never end. She gets paid big bucks and she is a in a position to make a change but she chooses not. It is part of her job to follow federal rules and file a complaint on this behavior. I really hope she did but she does not say.

As a DOD civilian, I also have to ensure I follow the rules. Here are just two

Report every allegation and ensure it is thoroughly and professionally investigated; take appropriate action based on the investigation

Hold every individual, every unit and organization, and every Commander appropriately accountable for their behavior, actions and inactions

I'm just saying that there are unfortunate gray areas. If someone actually grabbed her ass, she should complain, but dumb comments are something else.

Let's say she's just about to get a bill out of committee, a hard enough thing under any circumstances, and the committee chair makes a comment about her bra. Fat chance she'll make a stink at the time. We all have situations where we just eat it and wait for a better time.

she can still work with them after they are named. Any payback will be have the public spotlight on it. In fact they may go along with her to prevent the appearance of any payback. This behavior will not stop unless the names are put out there and they are made to answer for their conduct and rightly shamed for it.

she knows the names and it would be nice if I could use that information as part of my November election decision. Since she refuses to let us voters know this and makes the accusation in a for profit book, yes I do have issues with it.

Women do not need to be protected like a fragile flower, She probably is tougher than me putting up with the crap she has to on a daily basis.

It's an inflammatory accusation and often one of a few really bad things happen
Two of which are
1. People begin to doubt the credibility of the accusation because you don't name names
2. Many people get accused in a broad-brush assault

If you're going to make the accusation, you have to accept that you will have to say who these people are

They don't get that commenting on a woman's appearance isn't appropriate. These men might otherwise be fine people, but think nothing of saying shit about how a woman looks. My dad, 89, does it. He also does things like call nurses "girls" or "ladies". I tried over and over to get him to call them nurses as a sign of respect but it is ingrained.

If it really was harassment, then Sen. Gillibrand needs to step forward and name names. By being specific, she will be helping others caught in similar situations. It is both her legal and moral duty.

I for one am tired of timid behavior in matters like this one. There are certainly reasons (and often good reasons) for not stepping forward. But then you are enabling future misconduct.

As is said: All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing.

She should have kept it to herself, period. Women across the nation suffer from Sexual Harassment daily, and put their jobs at risk to file initial investigation charges against the harassers. They are risking MORE, MUCH MORE financially in many cases -- then Senator Gillibrand.

To write about this claims in a tell-all (but not really) book.....to sell COPIES of the publication for profit (of course), yet refuse to reveal who was who is disingenuous at best and scandalous at worst.

As for Chris Hayes....this is none of his business. He's a reporter (or talking head with a cable TV program is more like it) and not an human resources investigator on matters involving sexual harassment. This is for Gillibrand to tell names on the folks SHE'S accusing of these actions. If Gillibrand fails to do so, then Hayes need to worry about his job....which is reporting news, not "being" the news.
#SMH....

Do Daily and place their careers at risk to tell, report and if necessary file charges against their harassers. What can be fixed if no one knows who the harassers are?

Also, why release this information in a publication (FOR PROFIT, MIND YOU), yet fail to tell said names of the harassers to the public at large? Who says the voters of these States were the Senators hail from would WANT, DESIRE or CONTINUE supporting a Senate leader who believe harassing a Woman on her dress or body size is "acceptable behavior?"

So YES, she should tell or shut it. If anyone has a problem with that, so be it. The public has a right to know and especially the voters from these Senators states.

And as for Chris Hayes....REALLY? He really needsto shut it. It is not for him to make the news....he should stick to his J-O-B of reporting the news.
