Four NATO Allies Deny Ukraine Statement On Providing Arms

Source: REUTERS

KIEV - A senior aide to Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said on Sunday that Kiev had agreed at the NATO summit in Wales on the provision of weapons and military advisers from five NATO member states, but four of the five swiftly denied any such deal had been reached.

NATO officials have previously said the alliance will not send arms to non-member Ukraine, but have also said individual allies may do so if they wish. A NATO official contacted by Reuters on Sunday on the Lytsenko comment reiterated this policy.

"At the NATO summit agreements were reached on the provision of military advisers and supplies of modern armaments from the United States, France, Italy, Poland and Norway," Poroshenko aide Yuri Lytsenko said on his Facebook page.

Lytsenko gave no further details. He may have made his comment for domestic political reasons to highlight the degree of NATO commitment to Ukraine and to its pro-Western president.

A top level aide to Ukrainian President Poroshenko is on record saying his country will receive weapons and munitions from a variety of NATO countries. He claims the lethal aid was agreed to at the recent summit in Wales. One has to wonder if he was just misspeaking, or if he might have let the oh so secret cat out of the proverbial bag by mistake?

The rebels have something like 4000 30-year old tanks and a whole mess of newer ones at their disposal. Along with hundreds of artillery units, old and new, and 10s of thousands of troops, troop carriers, scores of choppers and a lot of MiGs. New tanks have started moving in since the Ukrainians dragged their anti-tank weapons out of storage. Not just T-68s any more, and not just stuff that could plausibly be claimed to have come from Ukrainian bases.

The Ukrainian army hasn't updated in 23 years. They should have de-Sovietized a couple of decades ago when Russia was weak, instead of buying that "brotherly relations" story meant to keep them in thrall.

This is the same model many want for Israel. One side supports and arms its dependents to the teeth. The other side must be above the moral fray and remain neutral. It helps if you have good PR and manage to get a nasty word to stick to the "immoral Untermenschen", whether they be Ukrainians or Jewish Israelis (few every mean "Israeli Druse" or "Israeli Arabs" when they criticize Israel).

You say the Ukrainian army hasn't updated in 23 years. But then you seem to be comparing them to Israel, which has always gotten the latest and best of everything from the US. And who is it that you think must "be above the moral fray" -- Iran? I'm really not sure what point you're making.

annexed by Russia.

The war with Russia has to be concluded. A Cold War style partition (think east and west Germany) with well- defined borders. Then NATO military assistance and possibly membership will be appropriate.
