Iraq secures area around key dam after US strikes

Source: BBC

Iraqi government forces say they have cleared Islamic State (IS) militants from a wide area around the strategic Haditha dam, helped by US air strikes.

The jihadists have repeatedly tried to capture the dam in western province of Anbar from government troops and allied Sunni Arab tribesmen.

The action marked a widening of US military action which has previously been restricted to northern Iraq.

US President Barack Obama will later reveal a strategy to defeat IS.

2. Why should President Obama "reveal a strategy to defeat IS"
Mon Sep 8, 2014, 02:10 AM
Sep 2014

that will be trashed on Republican television anyway? All that would do is give Senator "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb the shit out of everybody" something to bitch about next Sunday morning and IS a leg up on our game plan. TCOB, Mr. President... Say only what you need to about strategy (which is what you've been doing already) and know that most of the planet is with you. I've been watching events unfold and know for a fact that the wolves may see you as a sheep, but you are a lion (when necessary) and a fox in avoiding traps.

3. I don't trust the GOP or the 1%: they would sell their souls, their families, etc to control the US

I really don't understand how anyone other than the 1% votes for them, but their supposedly liberal TV's have been telling them for 34 years that Republicans are good and Democrats are bad. We really do need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine.

6. It is just theater

From what I understand in the MTP interview, he mentions the continual media focus on the "optics" of everything he does, so he is going to give the childish media some "theater" to keep them occupied, since all they do is manufacture it anyway. Meanwhile, he'll continue to work with the grownups to take care of the issue and will never reveal any "real" strategy.

I wish more people realized how well he actually has been dealing with IS and appreciated the fact that he didn't fall into the Syrian trap by toppling Assad. IS waited to see what we were going to do there before they blitzed Iraq, and they would be much stronger now had we made that mistake.

4. Good news... Keep them away from that dam, it would kill unknown numbers of people downstream,

because it is in need of daily maintenance. The freaks running around killing people don't have any other skills obviously. They are simply stealing property and people for the lulz that they don't know what to do with, so they enslave people to do the work for them. But they've killed off the ones who know how. They are indeed a cancer, one of many afflicting the globe these days.

5. He will not doubt elaborate on what he told our NATO allies in Wales to build a coalition.

Obama has given the general plan, and the GOP can't do shit. They didn't even care enough to stay in town and work on the nation's business.

This is all Segretti style howling to depress the voters. Too bad people are going to buy it and still complain about Obama.

He's not a dictator and can't keep things in secret except for operational details that would get our people, and our allies, killed. He'll present his case to the American people but MSM will try to block him in every venue.

Some of them will listen. He's not going to send boots on the ground. That has been telegraphed by Kerry and said directly by Obama. There is still a lot that can be done.

And it'll be done without the do-nothing GOP who are selling our nation to the Koch brothers while
some Americans will take a dump on Obama.

7. Kill and injure a few tens of thousands more Iraqis with American bombs and tanks . . .
Mon Sep 8, 2014, 07:24 AM

That strategy has always worked so well before, hasn't it?

Then we declare victory and everything is just aces for a couple of years, until the next generation is ready to fight us in the form of an even more fanatical, even more determined liberation movement. Thus the Military/Industrial Complex's self-sustaining cycle of invasion, disengagement and re-invasion can continue turning round and round forever.

and yes I mean that as a true thanks and not in a snarky way
this president is on top of it and makes me feel more secure in my daily life with each decision he makes. I trust him to make decision for me that is in my better interest and so far he has not let me down.
