Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy died Monday

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Truett Cathy, the Depression-era entrepreneur who turned a boneless chicken sandwich into the multi-billion dollar Chick-fil-A chain known for its exacting service and quirky “Eat Mor Chikin” cow advertising campaign, died at home early Monday at 1:35 a.m. He was 93.

Known for his genial manner and staunch religiou faith that was at the root of his business empire, Cathy was a rock star among Chick-fil-A fans. They swooned at signings of his books and were rapt when listening to how he accomplished his dream while sticking to his values, such as keeping stores closed on Sundays.

Cathy created his marquee sandwich in the early 1960s, testing it on customers at the Dwarf Grill (now called the Dwarf House) in Hapeville. He got the idea for the chicken patties after a poultry distributor asked if he could use chicken leftover from meals made for compact meals on planes.

...

Cathy slowed down in the past few years. In 2013, his son Dan Cathy assumed the post of chief executive officer and chairman. Truett Cathy became chairman emeritus.

Article doesn't even get into how Chick fil A became a hero to the right before Obama's re election with Dan Cathy speaking out against gay marriage. Seems that his dad had no problem with the restaurant he founded turning into an anti gay money laundering operation.

The staff was very nice, actually. No one got all religious. The food was good. I was with a big group and we ordered a bunch of the fattening "sides" and took bites. We also had the chicken which was really, really--I mean REALLY--tasty.

Sinful, I guess.

I feel bad that our money may have gone towards spreading hate.

I also found a disconnect with the "dwarf" name of the restaurant.

It's gotten to the point where any fast food place you go to, you're giving money to some company that sux whether it's anti-worker, anti-Obama, anti-whatever

At some point in your life you're kind of forced to unless you grow all your own food, spin your own yarn and thread to make your own clothes.
Sadly, no matter what you buy today it's funneling money into some sleeze's pocket

My wife and I do our best to make choices that are mindful of labor unions, human rights, LGBT equality, etc. In some cases the egregious violations of these principles in which we believe are easy to spot and even easier to avoid. Not eating at Chick fil A, Cracker Barrel, Papa Johns and Dominos is an easy choice.

37. Cracker Barrel -- where to give your money to racists and homophobes

I've known about Cracker Barrel's racist and homophobic policies for years and personally knew of one gay man who was fired for being gay, which they wrote in very ugly terms on his termination notice. I also knew of the longstanding investigation of and lawsuit filed against their racist policies. Maybe you can pick up some Duck Dynasty trinkets while you're there. They love those.

7. Cracker Barrel
It's almost a laughable stereotype that Cracker Barrel would be racist and anti-gay because of its southern roots, but of course, there's nothing funny about a company that doesn't treat its employees equally.

In 1991, 11 employees were fired for not displaying "normal heterosexual values," as was prescribed by an intra-company memo. Although founder Dan Evins later called this policy a "mistake," the attitude remains.

Since 2008, Cracker Barrel has jumped from 15 to 35 on the HRC scale, but that’s not much. It also has yet to include same-sex couples in its benefits coverage and doesn’t have a non-discrimination policy that protects "gender identity and/or expression," according to HRC.

It should also be noted that in 2004, the US Justice Department, after a long investigation, found that the chain restaurant had segregated customers, seated and served white customers before black customers, and allowed for white servers to refuse to wait on black customers.

Of course this list is just a handful of companies who have knowingly, and without care, discriminated against gays. But if you truly care about where your dollars are going, you can get the complete rundown of just how gay-friendly a company is or isn't by checking out the Human Rights Campaign’s Buyers Guide.

Cracker Barrel carries Duck Dynasty souvenirs in its restaurants. When the uproar over the Robertson's anti-gay rants became public, CB removed the items from its restaurants only to put them back on the shelves the very next day. It was a well-publicized stunt.

2 guys I went to school with worked at 2 different CFAs. One went into management and was with them for quite awhile before moving to management in the Burger King chain. I dont think there was a "no gays" unspoken policy. Matter of fact, I dont think you could own a CFA without actually working there for some time either. All franchises should be that way, IMO

Some grocery stores have 'restaurant-style' chicken patties in their frozen aisle. Very similar in taste.
McDonald's southern-style chicken sandwich. If the golden arches aren't in your 'no business' category yet, it tastes remarkably similar.

try this recipe.

http://www.topsecretrecipes.com/Chick-fil-A-Chicken-Sandwich-Copycat-Recipe.html

What my wife and I have done differently is use a buttermilk batter instead of plain milk, and marinated the chicken in dill pickle juice 6 hours before cooking.

Mon Sep 8, 2014, 12:14 PM
Sep 2014

But then, my mother (born and bred Scandahoovian) taught me to brine my poultry for at least three hours in a apple cider vinegar, citrus, and salt bath before preparing it to "kill off any salmonella" when I was eight, so marinating raw chicken in pickle juice was not a big stretch to begin with. Chickens also tended to be older when sold (you had a choice of the bigger but stringer plain chicken or the smaller, more tender and therefore more expensive young chicken), so brining also tenderized the poultry.
My southern in-laws swear my pan fried chicken is just like Chik-fil-A's, only better. Vlasic pickle "juice" seems to give the best results, and the Mt. Olive brand with Splenda works for my diabetic husband's fried chicken fix, but one of these days, I'm going to experiment with my own pickle recipes and see if I can't come up with a spicier pickle for the chicken.
