Poroshenko Promises 'Crushing Defeat' Of Rebels In Visit To Eastern Ukrainian City

A ceasefire struck between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists was largely holding on Monday in eastern Ukraine despite sporadic violations, but Europe’s security watchdog said the sides must push for a political settlement.

The ceasefire, which took effect on Friday evening, is part of a peace plan intended to end a five-month conflict the United Nations’ human rights envoy said had killed more than 3,000 people. It has also caused the sharpest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

resident Petro Poroshenko visited the eastern Ukrainian port of Mariupol on Monday in a show of solidarity with its embattled citizens and vowed to defend it from pro-Russian separatists who advanced towards it last week before a ceasefire agreement.

“This is our Ukrainian land and we will not give it up to anybody,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Donetsk keeps POW as Kiev refuses to present list of its prisoners

DONETSK, September 08. /ITAR-TASS/. Authorities of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic could not begin the prisoner swap as Kiev had refused to present its list of captured militias, the Novorossiya news agency said on Monday, referring to the republic’s acting Defense Minister Leonid Baranov.

“We have not received from Kiev lists of prisoners they plan to release,” the agency quotes the defense minister as saying. “We fear Kiev may cheat us as we release the prisoners we have.”

“The Donetsk Republic fears Kiev would not return captured militias after receiving their servicemen,” the agency said.

“Kiev says it holds about 200-300 prisoners,” the agency quoted the defense minister. “However, they still do not have detailed lists. Besides, about one thousand of our supporters and of Donbass’ civilians are unaccounted for, but in reality many of them are prisoners, too. We are releasing over one thousand in exchange to our three hundred people, and we do not want to be cheated.”

3. Poroshenko has gotten his orders from NATO and the IMF . . .

Either he retakes control of the valuable Donbas resources and industrial base, or he can forget more international loan billions and Western diplomatic backing. The West removed his predecessor for noncompliance and wavering loyalty. The same could soon happen to the chocolate oligarch, and don't doubt it.

Some people here seem to be under the impression that he is defending his country against Russians trying to link up with that territory they annexed earlier this year

Nor did I imagine a full background on the situation would be required for a chat board comment.

BTW: If you think Poroshenko is a great leader who is heroically "defending his country," I'd love to hear why!

Guess I'm so used to the gaggle of 'flying monkeys' discrediting every news source that publishes an article 'they' don't agree that I assumed you meant Reuters. Duh right back at you.

weren't peppering this site with links to explicit hate sites and white supremacists as well as Russian state media to make their case, such reactions would not occur.
