(Rick) Scott promises $1B in tax cuts during campaign stop in Winter Park

Source: Orlando Sentinel

WINTER PARK — Gov. Rick Scott brought his "Let's Keep Working" tax-cut tour to the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce on Monday, where he promised to reduce taxes by $1 billion over the next two years if he's re-elected.

The cuts would help businesses and families by giving people more money to spend on expenses from food to a college education, he said.

"We will be the No. 1 place to raise a family," Scott said. "This is about every family in Florida."

Scott, a Republican, touted his business-friendly record, praised small-business owners and gave them credit for creating jobs in Florida.

If you're a Republican, the answer is:

1. Tax rates of the very wealthy
2. Social security
3. Veteran's benefits
4. Welfare payments
5. Infrastructure spending
6. EPA funding
7. Funding for the Arts
8. WIC subsidies.......shall I go on?

he allowed J. Alexander's favorite pet project, Florida Tech to be done. BTW, for those not in the know, J alexander is a rich kid whose family kicked him out of the family biz, so he went into politics, where he would carve Universities out of others and put the new campuses on his land, which of course, would mean development prices skyrocket. The idea was to build a new heartland, which, well, it will explain if you note the new "universities" base their curriculum on Ayn Rand, and that Mr. Alexander has used the n word several times. It also helps that Rick Scott , after cutting the other universities, gave Alexander this well funded pet project, which, unlike MIT, expressly bans anything not Stem.

Worst case scenario: we have more people looking for jobs that are in India or China,
best case; we have a bunch of techies from a low ranking school that were weaned on Ayn Rand.

"The governor did not offer specifics at the campaign stop, but on his website he promised a constitutional amendment to prevent property taxes from increasing if individual home values do not rise, $200 million in tax holidays and cuts to other fees and taxes."

Yeah...property values are already going up quite steadily due to a rousing new housing boom all over Orlando (and I'm sure other parts of FL, too). That'll hold water. Well, at least until the next housing bubble bursts.

As for "other fees and taxes" maybe cutting costs of driver's licenses, car registration (esp. for out-of-state transfers), cut taxes on utilities, phones, cable, etc. and that might help the average person

But, come on, this will end up being cuts to dividend taxes, investment income, 2nd or 3rd homes, etc. Anything to benefit the wealthy.

he's also promised to increase funding to maintain the enviroment after he has just about done away with the DPR and the DNR.

Sales tax? Business taxes? Property taxes? Auto registrations fees? $1 billion is a lot of money to cut when there is no Income tax. Florida operates on it's fees and sales tax. Gut those by $1 billion and basically, there will be no money for education, elder care, infrastructure and other services the state provides for it's citizens. We'll become a pauper state. Bet that $1 billion tax cut will all benefit corporations.

a pauper state is the plan. At the very least, Scott and his henchmen in Tallahassee want to starve local governments. This has been in the works for years.

Yeah all you have to do in a Red State is say you will lower taxes and the goobers will all applaud it! Oh sure all it means is more money for big corporations and nothing for the little guy but the wingnuts think this will mean a massive amount of money in their pockets---it won't.
Of course there will be no money for rebuilding roads or bridges or funding schools or money for anything for that matter! But who cares about stuff like that? That's just socialism! Why people vote against their own self-interest never ceases to amaze me. I guess they just all drink the Faux News Kool Aid.

Roads cost money. Schools cost money. Water treatment costs money. Higher education, regulatory enforcement, police and fire fighting all cost money. Funding Medicaid costs money.

I wish these politicians would think these things through just a bit better. It is good policy to keep taxes as low as possible, but when cuts begin to erode the quality of life, then you begin a vicious cycle where businesses begin leaving and you have net loss of jobs in primary industries. The ripple effect from these losses costs indirect and induced jobs due to reduced demand. Pretty soon, you end up with a state that looks like Detroit, where the economic development plan isn't a few years - it's a few decades.

Wouldn't it be nice of these political lizards actually took a statesman or -woman like approach and thought about the generational ramifications of what they are doing?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? Been there and done that and we have empirical proof of the harm such supply side psychofiscal policy causes, first and foremost to the people of the state who suffer loss of vital services and are at successively greater risk of life and limb from deteriorating infrastructure, both human and physical. However as recent experience in Kansas has shown this magic unicorn Ayn Rand based cult approach to enriching the rich leads to your state plummeting headlong into bankruptcy. California, by contrast ,which recently repudiated this govern to make the one percent richer at the expense of everyone else approach has, by contrast, reaped significant economic benefits which will yield a higher quality of life for all its people. But of course these bootlickers of the billionaire class have no concern for all the people, just those who make them dance for their big checks.

Governors are giving tax cuts before they get thrown out. These will in turn create budget shortfalls ala Kansas. WI now has a 1.8 billion shortfall predicted from Walker's 2 Billion tax cuts to his rich buddies. Now when the Democrats get back in power, they will have to raise taxes and the Repubs can go out and call us tax and spenders again.

that's been their MO forever
