Apple stock falls after announcements

Source: USA Today

Apple's stock was volatile -- and shares ended lower -- as investors decided the news didn't match-up with the sky-high expectations and hype.

Shares of Apple ended down $0.37 to $97.99 -- dragging down the market and the tech-heavy Nasdaq along with it.

Apple stock initially picked up steam as the meeting progressed especially after the announcement of a mobile payment system. But the stock faded again after the company said its new watch would only work with iPhones and wouldn't be available until next year.

<snip>

But the fact the Apple Watch won't be available until next year is a bit of a surprise. Apple has long been known to capture on excitement over products by being ready to ship while the hype and anticipation is still there.

"The Apple Watch was more expensive than we had anticipated, will miss the holiday selling season, and must be tethered to an iPhone, which we believe will limit its revenue potential in the near-term," says Bill Kreher, analyst with Edward Jones in a note to clients where he reiterated his "hold" rating on Apple stock.

I am so sick of the hype when it comes to Apple. Why should any announcement of theirs be treated by the mainstream media (not tech bloggers or sites) as a news item? It surely isn't news that companies introduce new products.

I am not a fan of Apple at all.

I figure we've bought about 20 Apple products over the past 20 years or so:

Mac Desktop + Apple Inkjet Printer - 1992
Macbook Laptop - 1998
iPod Clickwheel 20 GB - Nov 2004
iPod Mini 4GB - Nov 2004
iPod Shuffle 1st Gen - Feb 2005
iPod Video 60 GB - Nov 2005
iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen - 2006
iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen - 2006
iPod Touch 4th Gen 64 GB - 2010
Macbook Air Mid-2011 128 GB - July 2011
iPod Touch 5th Gen 64 GB - Feb 2013
Apple TV 3rd Gen - 2013
Apple TV 3rd Gen - 2013
Apple TV 3rd Gen - 2013
Apple TV 2nd Gen - 2013
iPhone 5s 64 GB - Nov 2013
iPhone 5s 64 GB - Nov 2013
iPad Air 128 GB - Jan 2014
Macbook Air 13" 2013 - Apr 2014
Macbook Air 11" 2014 - Aug 2014

I'm not a fanboy. I'd never wait in line to buy something on day 1. But their stuff just works. It's all sharply designed, easy to use. The only dud was the 1st Gen Shuffle. It would freeze up and/or skip sometimes. Maybe it was exposed to some kind of moisture. IDK. I think it was probably a dud though. I've had much worse luck with other brands.

People now assume they have the vanguard of design... for instance, since the iwatch was secretive, people proposed concepts of what they thought Apple was capable of producing... like this concept:

But instead, they release this?

Me wonders if they just don't have it in their bones anymore.

Apple's livestream of its biggest announcement of the year, the introduction of its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, ran into a host of technical issues. Viewers reported a low-quality videostream that cut out constantly or momentarily froze. More bizarrely, for some would-be viewers, the voice of a Mandarin Chinese translation played in the in the background for a good chunk of Apple CEO Tim Cook's presentation. The livestream was only available to watch on Apple devices — so at least Windows users were spared the technical frustration.

I think Steve Jobs would probably be asking just one question - why isn't the iWatch round? Squared-off watches that have appeared in the past have often ended up looking dated. Plus, all the graphics used in the iWatch presentation were round, as if they were trying to compete with the square look of the screen. If they ever turn the watch into a round one, I think they'd have a winner.

I just started looking online and found the Moto360 (below), which is already out, and certainly has a certain elegance to it that obviously a square face can't bring to the table. Shocking that it is a round screen that looks so nice, and is already shipping.

At least the iWatch announcement caused me to do more research as I really thought Apple would be bringing a more elegant watch to the table.

Sorry to disappoint the Apple bashers, but the "fall" is off of two weeks of bidding the stock price to a new record high of $103, and having stock players taking their profits.

The stock closed at $97. I bought my stock (after splits) at 65c. Crying all the way to the bank.

Seriously?

Look for most people I know they like the fancy technology with all the apps and big screen and watch movies and WiFi.

But for musical collectors like myself - WE WANT SPACE AND LOTS OF IT.

And the best way we can get it - Ipod Classic 160g. My dream was that one day they would come out with a 320g. Now I have to pray my 160g will last long enough until I can find something else replace it.

People who use Ipod Classics love our classic because we want all our music with us all the time.

Interesting charts shown below to see how the day worked out for Apple's iPhone6 event in Cupertino.

CHART 1: Value was way up after they announced their electronic wallet feature for the iPhone 6.

CHART 2: Things dropped after the iWatch product was announced / thereafter.

______________

My guess is that announcing a product without shipping the product until some unknown time next year (5+ months away) and the look of the actual watch product must have had some impact on the wild swing. I don't think their stock would have slid from that peak had they proved they had hit another one out of the park with their watch.

The bashing gets old. As sports go, it mystifies me. Having witnessed the Thirty Years' War Part Two: The *ux Era, I get that people get both religious and tribal about their machines, but the Apple wars seems... even more evangelical.

The glee, that I don't get at all. Even when manpages vs info got bloody enough to sever friendships, I don't recall the grave dancing.
