French Police Seize 10 Suspected Islamic Militants

Source: NYT

Police were reported on Wednesday to have detained 10 suspected Islamic militants in early-morning raids across France -the latest in a series of measures apparently designed to display a forceful response to the killings seven people in the southwest of the country last month.

The round-up, with police officers and domestic security agents raiding at least five locations as far apart as Marseille in the south and Roubaix in the north, came 18 days before the first round of French presidential elections in which law and order issues have assumed prominence since the March attacks in Toulouse and Montauban.

1. "Seize them!!!!" Is it just me, or is that an unusual headline?

It just seems so 40's-Movie-Melodramatic to me, the use of that term. Why not just the pedestrian old "arrest?" When I hear "Seize" I envision a great deal of drama, with fellows in chain mail carrying pikes around...!

This does look a bit like seizing, I suppose:

French Islamists planned kidnappings: investigators

AFP - Some of the 16 suspected Islamic militants detained in France allegedly planned to kidnap a Jewish magistrate and other people, a source close to the investigation said on Tuesday.

"It looks like some of them planned to carry out kidnappings including that of a magistrate who has a Jewish-sounding name," the source said.

Another source confirmed that a Jewish magistrate from Lyon in central France was to be targeted.

The head of France's Central Directorate for Domestic Intelligence (DCRI), Bernard Squarcini, said on Saturday that those arrested the previous day were French nationals involved in "collective war-like training, linked to a violent, religious indoctrination".

and they were going to press in close proximity to the incident...but your article certainly has much more meat!

The leader of that pack is giving hoodies a bad name, the putz.

French police arrest the leader of the Forsane Alizza Islamic radical group Mohamed Achamlane after searching his house in Bouguenais, near Nantes western France, on March 30, 2012. Some of the 16 suspected Islamic militants detained in France allegedly planned to kidnap a Jewish magistrate and other people, a source close to the investigation said on Tuesday.

Thank you for putting this up--it added to my understanding of the business.

France to free suspected Islamist militants

PARIS | Fri Apr 6, 2012 3:46pm EDT

(Reuters) - French police were expected to release without charge on Friday the last six of 10 suspected Islamic militants arrested in dawn raids two days earlier, legal sources said.

Four were freed on Thursday after prosecutors found there was insufficient evidence to hold them. The sources would not confirm the exact timing of the release of the remaining six on Friday.

French officials said on Wednesday the suspects had been detained preventatively because they had a "similar profile" to Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old al Qaeda-inspired gunman who shot dead seven people, including three Jewish schoolchildren, in southwest France last month.

A police source described those held as "isolated individuals who are self-radicalized".

8. yes, that's how these media hype events usually turn out these days

police and politicians make grandiose and sensationalist statements to the media, trying to whip up a really hysteric anti-Muslim fervor with crazed reports about spectacular atrocities planned by the usual-looking suspects they've rounded up, then quietly dismiss the matter entirely some time later--but have usually moved on to the next two minutes of hate by then.
It is unfortunate to see supporters of Israel so eagerly support these witch-hunts, for the very same tactics were previously employed against them just a couple generations ago.
