Michelle Obama backs (Martha) Coakley at Dorchester stop

Source: Boston Globe

Locked in a neck-and-neck contest for governor of Massachusetts, Attorney General Martha Coakley got some high-powered help Friday from first lady Michelle Obama, who wooed supporters and urged them to remain tightly focused on the campaign.

Addressing a packed crowd at the Strand Theatre in Dorchester, Obama hailed Coakley as a “tireless advocate’’ for victims of violence, contraception coverage, a higher minimum wage, and earned sick time for working families.

“She believes that no one should ever have to choose between keeping their jobs and taking care of their sick child,’’ Obama said. “If you want a governor who will stand up to powerful interests, if you want a governor who is truly on your side, then you need to elect Martha.”

With polls showing a close contest in the final weeks of the campaign, Coakley -- paired with lieutenant governor candidate Steve Kerrigan on the Democratic ticket -- is hoping to persuade her true believers that a big turnout at the polls is pivotal.

I'm just not ready to forgive her for frittering away the Ted Kennedy seat.

SO, you're goona vote for the other guy whose policies are wrongheaded just because you can't see yourself getting over her lackluster campaign from the past?

I wish you'd reconsider.

Coakley is still trying to shed the image she created in the Brown/Coakley debacle.

I'm not so sure she can win in November.

She is most definitely educated, not only book-smart but also street smart. I can honestly see a bright future for Michelle Obama in Politics, IF THATS THE ROUTE SHE WANTS TO GO....

Not Senate per se but politics but am unsure she would let herself become compromised like almost all other politicians. John Stewart (actually in the context of Barack Obama) said that the "Senate is where smart people go to die".

Coakley's poor support vs Baker is due to Coakley being really a terrible candidate. I could not imagine voting for Baker and his tea-party partner, but voting for Coakley is almost as bad.

1. Coakley has continually failed to recognize prosecutorial misconduct. She denies that police misconduct/excessive violence occurs; she denies there was ever a wrongful conviction. She has opposed paying compensation to those wrongfully imprisoned. She would defend the Ferguson SWAT cops.

2. Coakley repeatedly failed to recognize the wave of hysteria that created the Fells Acre "daycare sex abuse" mess. Innocent people are still in prison. Coakley rose to prominence riding on the child-abuse and 'recovered memory' hysteria, and she will not let it go.

3. She lost the "buffer zone" case before the Supreme Court. Her brief was weak.

4. Coakley has agreed to a very bad deal that allows a Catholic-oriented hospital conglomerate to take over many community hospitals: South Shore, Lawrence Memorial, Melrose-Wakefield, and Union Hospital in Salem. Partners Healthcare is already the highest cost hospital group in New England; allowing them new acquisitions assures a monopoly.

Moreover, Partners, where they gained market dominance, have installed Catholic dogma restrictions on birth control, abortions(of course), vasectomies, ligations, and even refused D&Cs following a miscarriage.

5. Coakley will be a disaster for 4th and 5th Amendments and for all of civil liberties. Coakley justifies police summarily seizing cash from drivers (recently Canadians were warned about driving to the USA) and using forfeiture of assests without a trial to enrich local police departments.

Would Baker be worse? The question vexes us.
