When the Islamic State commander known as Omar the Chechen called to tell his father theyd routed the Iraqi army and taken the city of Mosul, he added a stark message: Russia would be next.
He said dont worry dad, Ill come home and show the Russians, Temur Batirashvili said from his home in Georgias Pankisi Gorge, on the border with the Russian region of Chechnya. I have many thousands following me now and Ill get more. Well have our revenge against Russia.
As the U.S. and European countries assess the risk of home-grown jihadists returning to stage attacks on their native countries, the turmoil in the Middle East also reverberates in the Caucasus. The region wedged between Russia, Iran and Turkey is an intricate web of tensions thats erupted into violence in the past three decades in hot spots from Chechnya to Nagorno-Karabakh and Georgia.
Batirashvilis son Tarkhan comes from an area that Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses of aiding Islamist rebellions that hes spent more than a decade trying to crush. While Russia is focusing on the conflict in Ukraine, Georgians remember the humiliation in a five-day war in 2008, when Putin helped cement the separatist movements in the provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

(6,241 posts)We don't like ISIS, but we're not crazy about the Russians. We kind of think the Chechens ok because of how the russians treat them, but they are friends with ISIL and... ugh.
So a diagram would help a bunch.

(11,014 posts)It is one thing to fight a rag-tag demoralized Iraqi army and quite another to fight Russians. Putin will not hesitate to use massive firepower without regard to anything but winning.
Being Russia's internal matter, the usual imperialistic disguised as do-gooders of EU/NATO/US will be powerless.

How's it feel to have these wacko ISIS freaks go after you?!?!
Not only is Russian Security watching the IS situation closely, if they drag Putin into by name they will be wishing they had just shut the (epletive deleted) up in the first place. Russia may have some corrupt leaders, but they are damned effective when it comes to dealing with scumbag wanna be militants like IS. Go ahead, try something against Russia, IS, I triple dog dare you.

(6,401 posts)...Putin tip-toeing around the grey line of whats legal and supporting rebels in East Ukraine rather than just taking Kiev out right must mean he's gotten soft. That may be a major error on their part.
