BREAKING: Wyo. Won't Appeal Marriage Equality

Source: The Advocate

The Equality State is about to live up to its name, after Wyoming's Republican leadership announced today it will not appeal a federal judge's Friday decision requiring the state to begin performing and recognizing same-sex marriages. Same-sex couples will be able to marry in Wyoming immediately after the state formally files its notice with the court Tuesday morning.

Wyoming attorney general Peter K. Michael plans to inform the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming Tuesday at 10 a.m. that his office, also representing Gov. Matthew Mead, does not plan to appeal U.S. District Judge Scott Skvdahl's Friday ruling in favor of marriage equality, reports Cheyenne's KGWN TV.

After Michael's office files its formal notice that the state will no longer defend its ban on same-sex marriage, Skavdahl's ruling will take effect immediately, bringing marriage equality to Wyoming. Skavdahl had placed a hold on his Friday ruling until this Thursday, or until state officials stopped defending the existing marriage law.

The attorney general pointed not only to Skavdahl's ruling but to the recent avalanche of pro-equality decisions, including two from Oklahoma and Utah that the U.S. Supreme Court let stand earlier this month. By refusing to review those decisions, the Supreme Court effectively made the lower courts' rulings legally binding in all states in the 10th Circuit, which includes Wyoming.

I think it's 33. Decisions are coming sown on a daily basis and a judge in Kansas has set up a showdown on Friday there. Will they be next? Or will another one finally get on the right side of history before then? One thing is for sure, I am still screwed here in Florida.

so will Texas. That will lead to the handful of sparsely populated states that it is fact. "North Dakota, it's for Queer hunters"! license plates aren't going to go over well. Florida is due to flip on January 5, only because administratively they have to get their crap together for what is going to be a deluge.

They will blow where the wind goes, and clearly, it isn't in favor of denying marriage to those that wish to enter into a life-long commitment of cherishing, being loyal and loving those they marry.

Anyone that thinks it is vile needn't go to a gay marriage ceremony, but once it is legal, I can guarantee you that MANY will receive invitations whether they wish to celebrate or not.

Texas has the same problem as Florida does, and some of our most populous states. They have to handle logistics. Wyoming as a state might have ten people want to marry, not a problem. They have low population density. Idaho wasn't a problem, either. Texas and Florida are another kettle of fish, as New York and California were.

They have high population centers, and then ... areas (counties) where nobody lives there except cows, farmers and agriculture areas.

I just looked at a map and we only have 7 states left that do not have gay marriage or are about to
flip to having gay marriage w/a court ruling.

Last year after the Windsor ruling with SCOTUS, I said we would have Marriage Equality within 5 years. I was laughed at and said we will get there but not anytime soon and not in my time frame.

Thank God I am always one to go against the grain.

Also President Obama just announced that he believes that Marriage Equality is covered under the U.S. Constitution & said it should not be up to the States anymore. Coming from a President and a man with his background in Constitutional law, that's huge!

I work for the state and it's open enrollment. I just noticed that today. I think the ruling was, what, last week or the week before? So that's damn quick.

And the state is telling clerks they need to register same-sex marriages or run the risk of being fired. Sometimes change happens quickly.

I have not heard any talk at work about this at all. I don't read the paper, so I can only imagine what the letters might say, but I haven't heard a lot of negativity anyway.

I guess it depended on when the court cases made it through the system. For instance Oregon was about the 20th or something (can't remember for sure) and I consider it pretty progressive.

It's almost to the point where the real hard cases are left. Maybe that's good since the dominoes are falling so quickly.
