Report: NCAA investigating Jameis Winston point-shaving allegations

Source: MSN

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston simply can’t stay out of the news. According to a report by the gossip rag TMZ, the NCAA is currently investigating the Seminoles quarterback for allegations that he was involved in a point shaving scheme.

The initial story, which was released last week, indicated that University of Alabama at Birmingham player Chris Rabb may have placed bets on Florida State’s game against Louisville earlier this year. UAB is in the midst of an investigation of its own.

This kid could rape the Dean of Women on her desk, with all major media present, and he would not be messed with.

As long as he can throw touchdowns and do wonderful stuff with a football, he will be a saint.

Until that ass-kissing Jimbo Fisher admits that he has a loose, really loose, cannon playing on his team, he will continue to get away with it and he'll go on to the NFL and be paid millions of dollars to be the face of professional athletics.

It is a sad situation, one that is repeated all over the country.

These kids are lionized for their ability to do things with a football, given multi-thousand dollar scholarships for it, even in light of the fact that most of them attend very few classes.

But they bring the Championships home! That's what it's all about!

FSU covered the Louisville spread, btw, with a great comeback engineered by Winston, but I guess that doesn't really matter. maybe that guy bet $5,000 for FSU to win and Winston played extra hard, oh wait, that doesn't make any sense now does it.

So Winston allegedly tanks the first half and plays his usual in the second.

I'm not saying I believe Winston intentionally played bad or not I'm just clarifying.

I have no idea if he was tanking in the first half or not. Perhaps the difference between the first and second half stats are simply the result of halftime adjustments, but if he was tanking in the first half, this is probably what you'd expect the stats to look like.

Gossip rag TMZ?

I am no fan of Winston and FSU, but surely this guy is just a football player, not a James Bond villain.

10. Let me get this straight, he is sooo well paid by the U or the boosters
Mon Nov 10, 2014, 01:59 PM
Nov 2014

that he fixes games to make more spendin' money? Signs autographs, risking his scholarship and place on the team, which like it or not, is his job interview for the pros, all for a little cash even though he makes bank from the boosters? He has to steal some crab legs for dinner with his girl because he cannot spend that cash he gets from the U on seafood, it is prohibited under the rules of "paying the jocks" doctrine?

Have athletes been paid in the past? Yes, derrrr, are they still, maybe, probably, but the burden is on you if you claim that Winston is being paid. Prove it.

The reality is that these athletes are getting the short end of the stick. Schools and corporations make bank off of their talent and likenesses and putting their logos all over them, but give them some spending cash and the kid gets fucked.

And before you say it, they cannot work and cannot be rewarded for their expertise, like other scholarship recipients can, they are poor and remain that way until they leave school. They are required to spend massive amounts of their time working and competing their asses off on a football team. This ain't Pop Warner, this shit counts and if you do not perform you are done.

I await more cliches.

12. I've been saying athletes should be compensated for years...
Mon Nov 10, 2014, 02:35 PM
Nov 2014

And I thought I laid out pretty clearly that there's no chance he would involve himself in any point-shaving...For starters it would kill any potential NFL career, and if you look at previous point shaving scandals in the modern era, college athletes have traditionally been very cheap to "buy"...

FWIW, I work at a university, I've had friends who went on to play for major college programs, and I've had relatives who coached/recruited at major programs, so I know the score...I know fans and the sports media turn a blind eye to what really goes on, but if they ever knew about even ten percent of the stories which never make the news...Yes, the entire system of college sports is a farce and needs to be torn down and rebuilt, but at long as schools still pretend to adhere and abide by the law of the current system, that is the standard they have to be judged by...

And I'm pretty sure the crab legs wasn't so much as "I'm broke and have no money to pay for them," versus "I'm used to doing whatever I want without rhyme or reason, because if I ever get in real trouble, the program will 'fix' it..."

13. Pay for play
Mon Nov 10, 2014, 02:36 PM
Nov 2014

Lets put the possible point shavings aside for a second. Athletes and their families are routinely compensated by outside sources such as boosters and former athletes. I have first hand knowledge of a former athlete at an ACC school loaning cars from his dealership to the parents of the athlete under a deferred loan deal. The loan will never be paid back and once the athlete has left that school for the pros then the NCAA never checks to see if the loan was paid back.

There are many purists out there who state that the student athlete is getting room, board, meals and books in exchange for the scholarship that they receive, but the truth is that the scholarship pales in comparison to what the University makes off that athlete, particularly if the school is 1A in football and regularly goes to bowl games or if the consistently make the NCAA tournament in basketball. Doug Flutie once said that he figured out that Boston College made $42 million off of his career at BC. That is one hell of an education. One other thing that people forget about student athletes and that is the fact that they cannot hold a job during the semester that their sport is in action. For basketball players that is the entire school year and for football players it can be the same way because of spring ball. Not defending Jameous Winston but the system does not work in favor of the athlete.

14. Point shaving would be incredibly difficult
Mon Nov 10, 2014, 03:13 PM
Nov 2014

For one athlete or even several athletes to mastermind. It's difficult in football because Winston has ZERO effect of 2/3 the game. He doesn't play defense, can't affect defensive calls, and he doesn't play special teams.

In their closest game this year, it was a penalty on Notre Dame that clinched the win for FSU. Winston would have had no chance to affect this outcome.

The accuser in this case, also made similar, ultimately unproven allegations about Tajh Boyd (Clemson QB) several years ago. The guy goes by the name "Incarcerated Bob" and wow, he happens to run a gambling website.

18. While this is true, if the halftime spread (which I understand the bet was on the halftime spread)
Mon Nov 10, 2014, 08:35 PM
Nov 2014

had FSU up (which I'm sure it did) he doesn't need to control the defense, just the offense. If FSU doesn't score, it doesn't really matter if Louisville does or not. 0-0 and Louisville beats the spread. If the bet is on Louisville to beat the spread, you don't need to have control over the defense (though you'd still have to gamble against a defensive TD).
