Russian TV claims it has photo of downing of MH17

Source: AP-Excite

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian state television has released a satellite photograph that it claims shows that a Ukrainian fighter jet shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. But the U.S. government dismissed the report as preposterous and online commentators called the photo a fake.

All 298 people aboard the Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur were killed when it was shot down July 17 over a rebel-held area of Ukraine. Ukraine and the West have blamed the attack on Russia-backed rebels using a ground-to-air missile.

The photo released Friday by Russia's Channel One and Rossiya TV stations purportedly shows a Ukrainian fighter plane firing an air-to-air missile in the direction of the MH17. The channels said they got the photo from a Moscow-based organization, which had received it via email from man who identified himself as an aviation expert.

The U.S. State Department on Friday dismissed the Russian TV reports as yet another "preposterous" attempt by Moscow to "obfuscate the truth and ignore ultimate responsibility for the tragic downing of MH17." It renewed a call to Moscow and Russia-backed separatists to "grant unfettered access for international investigators to the crash site."

with glaring mistakes in the image.

KIEV, Ukraine — The man whose email was used as proof that Ukraine shot down MH17 told BuzzFeed News that he had found the image on a forum and was upset that it had been used so widely on Russian TV.

George Bilt—who said he is an MIT graduate and aviation expert with 26 years experience, but would not provide further biographical details—said that he had come across an earlier report by the Russian Union of Engineers (RUE) blaming a Ukrainian fighter jet for the crash, and thought that it concurred with his own amateur findings. When he saw the picture online, Bilt wrote to Andreyevsky, the “expert” from the broadcast, with a link to the forum where the image was posted, clearly stating that he had found it there.

“Those folks are either desperate or totally unprofessional,” he said.

Glad your picture was in color. Nazis were a big thing in 1937.

'The more things change, the more they stay insane.'

Yes, that is a Swastika on the Hindenburg as it flies over NYC. It also flew over Boston, New Jersey and to a US Naval Station.

In New York City, funeral services for the 28 Germans who lost their lives in the Hindenburg disaster are held on the Hamburg-American pier, on May 11, 1937. About 10,000 members of German organizations lined the pier. (AP Photo /Anthony Camerano)

Lehmann, former commander of the zeppelin Hindenburg, during funeral services held on the Hamburg-American pier in New York City, on May 11, 1937. Trigger Warning if one goes to the link. Photos, some victims and those who escaped injury. The USA and Germany were getting along then:

So...I guess he got the word that there was a photograph released.

Putin recently made a point about Western aggression causing major instability. This lengthy speech was largely ignored by our free press in the rush to maintain a bad image for Russia. Indeed propaganda from our own side is rife and some eager commenters here seem over zealous and twisted if not straight up paid-for shill.

Actually the likelihood of a surface missile hitting a flight (directed by Ukranian air traffic controllers) at such an elevation is dubious. The Russian claim should be taken up openly instead of just getting shot down ... automatically.

While evidence from Wikileaks goes on being totally ignored in terms of any reporting, never mind legal action, it doesn't even matter if Russia even has evidence against Ukraine over this very strange 'accident'. People here are gearing up for a new cold war and apparently greeting it with a taste for seeing Putin and Russia suffer.

All the victories in Iraq and Afghanistan, Libya and Syria have apparently emboldened them.

And you stated a blatant falsehood when you claimed that surface to air missiles are unlikely to reach a plane that high.

Suface-to-air missiles are - by definition and design - capable of hitting planes at altitude. It's what they do. Their raison d'etre, as it were.

You will of course, draw a distinction without a difference in regards to Putin's fleet of warships off the northeast coast of Australia, how it's not intended to cause major instability, and cite propaganda to bolster this bias, yes?

33. Web users debunk Russian TV's MH17 claim
Sun Nov 16, 2014, 09:37 PM
Nov 2014
Several commentators pointed out that the "Malaysia" logo on the plane from the photograph was in the wrong place. Maksim Kats, a Russian blogger, said the plane in the picture looked like a slightly altered version of the one that tops the search results if you Google "Boeing view from above" in Russian. It also happens to be a publicity photo of a Boeing 767, not a 777, which was shot down over Ukraine in July.

Others noted that the fighter jet looked different from an Su-25 - the type which the Russian media had consistently claimed shot down MH17.

There were also claims that the shape of clouds in the satellite image proved that it actually came from a Google Earth photo of the area taken on 28 August 2012.

Furthermore, those who carried out a reverse image search on Google found that the photograph with the two planes was not so new or exclusive after all: it was first uploaded to a Russian forum on 15 October. Its source was claimed to be "enthusiasts from the Russian wikileaks".
