Missouri Governor Activates National Guard
Source: abcNEWS
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard in advance of a grand jury decision about whether a white police officer will be charged in the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.
Nixon said Monday that the National Guard would assist state and local police as needed, in case there is civil unrest when the grand jury's decision is announced.

(1,446 posts)There is no proof of this list at the Facebook link. A page called "The Gateway Pundit" published this list and a map but it doesn't seem to show up anywhere else. Also published was a quote that looting and violence may be necessary, attributed to a random Ferguson protester but the link provided for that goes nowhere. Someone is stirring up shit and hoping it catches on.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_State_killings
A group of around a hundred African-American students had gathered on Lynch Street (named after John R. Lynch), which bisected the campus, on the evening of Thursday, May 14 to protest the United States invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War.[2] By around 9:30 p.m. the students had started fires, thrown rocks at motorists and overturned vehicles, including a large truck. Firefighters dispatched to the scene quickly requested police support.
The police responded in force. At least 75 Jackson police units from the city of Jackson and the Mississippi Highway Patrol[3] attempted to control the crowd while the firemen extinguished the fires. After the firefighters had left the scene, shortly before midnight, the police moved to disperse the crowd then gathered in front of Alexander Hall, a women's dormitory.
Advancing to within 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 m) of the crowd, at roughly 12:05 a.m., officers opened fire on the dormitory.[4] The exact cause of the shooting and the moments leading up to it are unclear. Authorities claim they saw a sniper on one of the building's upper floors and were being sniped in all directions. Later two city policemen and one state patrolman reported minor injuries from flying glass,[5] and an FBI search for evidence of sniper fire was negative.[6] The students say they did not provoke the officers. The gunfire lasted for 30 seconds, and at least 140 shots were fired by a reported 40 state highway patrolmen using shotguns from 30 to 50 feet. Every window on the narrow side of the building facing Lynch Street was shattered.[5]
The crowd scattered and a number of people were trampled or cut by falling glass. Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, 21, a junior, and James Earl Green, 17, a senior and miler[5] at nearby Jim Hill High School, were killed; twelve others were wounded. Gibbs was killed near Alexander Hall by buckshot, while Green was killed behind the police line in front of B. F. Roberts Hall, also with a shotgun.

(12,754 posts)The Jackson State incident seemed more planned on the part of the police -- and there was the example of Kent State a few days earlier that should have led the police to back off a little.
However, I think the fact that Kent State happened first made it stick more in people's mind. It was a watershed moment that galvanized a lot of people and exposed the government for what it was.
I was an anti-war activist in the late '60s. We had demos and peace vigils, etc. and got a few people. The numbers were increasing by 1970. But the demo we had after Kent State was just overwhelming. So, the incident at Jackson State became kind of a "Oh, no, not again moment." (I'm not denying that there may be some racism involved.) But this is why I always mention the two together. People shouldn't forget.

This bunch of ass clowns, the "leaders", have no clue as to what they are fucking with, on both sides. Raging stupid. People egging others on to march into what other people are prepared for. I don't think the black leaders are pushing for a confrontation, but I think it could easily be provoked.
Dumbest tactic ever.

(2,086 posts)I'm beginning to believe they actually want to provoke the population so they can lie and over-react; another excuse to erode our civil rights for our "safety", and another condemnation of our black population. An overall hardworking and responsible folk that have carried the burden of the white conservatives' fear, hatred, and manipulation for centuries.
I'm very upset.

(7,908 posts)federalize the MO National Guard RIGHT NOW!, so as to take them out of Nixon's control. And then task the (federalized) National Guard with disarming all local constabulary forces.

(9,951 posts)that would be illegal and trigger a Constitutional crises, just exactly what the repubs would be itching for.
And, BTW, I'll bet alot of the NG are police officers, you think they'll obey any order to disarm their brothers and sisters?
A little critical thinking goes a long way.

(5,455 posts)We all hope the National Guard isn't needed, but you don't wait for the shit to hit the fan before you decide to make sure the National Guard is ready.
Doing this now gives the National Guard units time to assemble, do whatever needs to be done to get ready and probably spend sometime brushing up on their riot control training.
Given the high tensions and the potential for problems, it would be extremely irresponsible for Gov Nixon not to have the National Guard ready.

There is no 'verdict' here.

(24 posts)Could this be as simple as someone trying to be proactive and prevent another L.A. riot?
I am not saying that is why, but the situations are very similar and if this cop gets off free of murder then it is a possibility(not saying it will happen), and I am sure we all remember how out of hand that got.
60 people died when racist cops got off scott free back then and they could be just wanting to prepare for,the worste case cenario.......but I could also be wrong.
