New York City is finalist for 2016 Democratic National Convention

Source: Newsday

New York City has made it to the final round of cities under consideration as host of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic National Committee announced Monday.

The city, along with Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio, are the three finalists in the search for a home for the presidential nominating convention. Birmingham, Alabama, and Phoenix are no longer potential hosts.

"We are fortunate to have such a diverse and vibrant group of cities interested in hosting this special event and we thank Phoenix and Birmingham for showcasing their special communities," Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. "We look forward to working with Columbus, New York, and Philadelphia as we go forward."

If New York's bid is successful, the $100 million convention would be hosted for the first time at Brooklyn's Barclays Center arena. Backers of the bid have hailed Brooklyn, which is Mayor Bill de Blasio's home borough, as a Democratic bastion.

The committee said the convention would be held during one of three weeks in 2016: the weeks of July 18, July 25 or Aug. 22. Officials are expected to announce the final city and date early next year.

In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio has made a spirited case for his home borough, Brooklyn, where the convention would be held at the Barclays Center. Mr. de Blasio was planning to convene a meeting with community leaders about the city’s efforts on Monday afternoon.

The bidding process has set off an occasional war of words between officials in New York and Philadelphia, where former Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania has championed that city’s bid (he previously served as its mayor).

I went deliberately looking for them (they were easy to spot with all the ID tags hanging off them) and told as many as possible to go to Hell.

had the misfortune of seeing the GOP befoul tampa with their convention, and saw how mcuh money Hotels and merchants got CHEATED out of.

I may admire the 50 state strategy, provided that this version is less tolerant of Landrieu style Blue Dogs, but frankly, I would nto put a Democratic convention in Dixie until some governors and senators turn Democrat. The GOp wanted to be the party fo Dixie, well, let's see what happens. This is different from a general boycott, because, like embragos, genral boycotts hit the middle class, whereas convetnions are of, for and by the fat cats.

NY has had it before and is so typical anyway.

Birmingham does not deserve the convention. When was the last time Alabama voted for the Democrat for president? 1976. Where are all the statewide elected Democrats? Show me the blue. Arizona needs to repeal SB 1070, then we'll talk .

presumably earlier in the summer than the Dems anticipated date.

A Dem convention in Columbus would be an antidote to that.

And, yes, it's important to that the Dems win Ohio in 2016.

And, no, Kasich will not be the likely Repub. candidate, despite the media talk of late.
The media touts his win by a huge margin; - that wasn't because he is well-loved in Ohio.

It's because the Dem. candidate's campaign collapsed pitifully during the summer, and he - Ed FitzGerald- took down the entire Dem. slate, which included some good people.

All of your points are correct. I'm also cancelling my subscription to the Columbus Discharge because of their daily big wet ones to Johnny K.

While this would be great for ME (I'm 1/2 mile from Barclays Center) it would be huge burden on Brooklyn, and all of the benefits (hotel rooms, party spaces) would end up in Manhattan.

I can't believe anyone else even believes that NYC is actually in the running.

Even if Hillary is running, and she is.
