St. Louis Police Officers Association Condemns Rams Players' 'Hands Up' Gesture
Source: Huffington Post
By Andrew Hart
The St. Louis Police Officers Association condemned the "hands up, don't shoot" gesture that several St. Louis Rams players made during the game on Sunday as a show of support for Ferguson protesters.
A statement by the organization called for the players who participated in the act to be disciplined, and demanded the Rams and the NFL apologize:
The St. Louis Police Officers Association is profoundly disappointed with the members of the St. Louis Rams football team who chose to ignore the mountains of evidence released from the St. Louis County Grand Jury this week and engage in a display that police officers around the nation found tasteless, offensive and inflammatory.
Before the game in St. Louis against the Oakland Raiders, five Rams players ran onto the field with their hands raised in a show of support for Ferguson protesters. The "hands up, don't shoot" gesture has come to represent surrendering to police, and has been used to protest the killing of Michael Brown by Ferguson, Mo. Police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. Some witnesses claimed Brown had his hands up when he was shot.

(24,695 posts)Guess what maybe the St.Louis police should have in there training program on when someone puts there hands up they should not shoot first and then ask questions later and just maybe they could and should take a sensitivity training class, since they have failed to serve and protect right along with the bias city prosecutor.

I'm not much of a sports fan and couldn't begin to explain the difference between a tight end and a wide receiver. But I'm writing you to express my strong and unqualified support for the Rams 5 gesture of "Hands Up, Don't Shoot!" before yesterday's game and to ask that your organization speak out on their behalf and condemn the remarks of Jeff Roorda, the Executive Director of the St. Louis Police Officers Association.
NFL players do not relinquish their First Amendment rights to Free Speech when they don a team uniform, Roorda's ugly threats notwithstanding. I actually think it would be a very moving gesture were every player of every team to do something similar at next week's game. I mean, without the players, the game and league cease to exist.
Please support the Rams 5. They put their asses on the line for a very important principle - the right to freedom of speech. I might even become an NFL fan if you do! (And, let me tell you, as an English teacher, I would be moving my own mountain to Mohammed to do so!
Warmest regards and solidarity with your collective bargaining unit,
The union needs to know the public has its back.

Your email is outstanding. I love how you write.
Even more - how you think and speak out. Have a wonderful day.

(718 posts)Should apologize for the behavior of their members. Police officers everywhere are clueless about how fed up people truly are with the bullying and the violence and the shootings perpetrated on citizens and especially on minorities.

(36,427 posts)The NFL will not adhere to a request from the St. Louis Police Officers Association to discipline St. Louis Rams players who did the hands up, dont shoot pose used by protesters in Ferguson, Mo. during pre-game introductions on Sunday.
We respect and understand the concerns of all individuals who have expressed views on this tragic situation, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports.
The police officers association issued a letter late Sunday condemning the players actions as tasteless, offensive and inflammatory given a grand jurys decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of black teenager Michael Brown.
Five Rams players raised their hands as they walked out of the tunnel onto the field at the Edwards Jones Dome before Sundays game against the Oakland Raiders.
<snip>
Tight end Jared Cook said he and his teammates wanted to show solidarity with protesters, because they had not been able to physically join them since the grand jurys announcement was made last week. Cook said his family members went to Ferguson last week and reported back to him what they saw.

This is police intimidation. This isn't just a complaint, they are telling the NFL to take action against the players. The NFL should sue the St. Louis Police Officers Association, or at least file a criminal complaint.

(6,960 posts)but I want to add another. Those NFL players know all too well that out of uniform and on any American street, they too could be a Michael Brown! So their peaceful show of support had deeper meaning
And yes, fuck the St. Louis Police Officers Association and the murdering, intimidating klansmen it represents.
