Former NY Gov. George Pataki again exploring long-shot bid for presidency

Source: NY Daily News

Former Gov. George Pataki is again dipping his toe into the presidential waters — even as political experts give the Republican virtually no shot for the 2016 race.

Pataki in recent weeks has traveled twice to New Hampshire. He’s also hitting South Carolina to kick off this week.

He has been in contact with national Republican donors and even has an ad — funded by the super PAC Americans for Real Change — on TV titled “It’s Time for a New America” that calls for “less government, more freedom.”

In a Nov. 20 tweet touting a trip to New Hampshire, Pataki wrote that “America needs a President who respects our Constitution” and included the hashtag “immigration” — a reference to President Obama’s executive order sparing millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation.

1. Why is this sheer entertainment value?

At the end of the day - a lot of young people in NY that voted for Bill Clinton twice - voted for Pataki twice.

I'm one of them.

Pataki was only the 2nd (Ford 1st) Republican I ever voted for back when I was an Independent. However, he was a matter of Fool Me Once, etc.

12. Interesting. My deal is, if Hillary (assuming it's her) goes down in 2016

for some reason, I'd rather see someone not-crazy/not-Bush/not-Romney win. The more people in the pool, on both sides, the better, as far as I'm concerned. I also am glad Webb appears to be running.

Bot a first choice for me - but a Goid disruptor.

And God forbid Hillary loses - someone like Pataki wouldn't be frightening.

If Pataki can help pull the GOP back towards the center more power to him. Still can't bring myself to vote for a Republican, though.

...definitely NOT with respect to assessing his chances of being President.

11. not sure I would write him off so soon --- he could be 2016's Romney

winning the nomination after all the crazies implode. Consider they are taking Perry, who proved himself a fool in 2012 and is now indicted, seriously. Romney was a one term governor, who was deeply disliked by the end of his term. Pataki got re-elected. MA is bluer than NY, but NY is pretty blue. (The biggest problem might be that the Republicans may consider they went centrist twice with McCain (who is pretty conservative) and Romney and lost -- so they may see they need someone to "energize" the base. )

Not to put any credibility into any poll done 2 years out, the recent Quinipiac poll has Romney beating Hillary Clinton, while others are running closely behind her. (I don't trust this as it is a big jump from a month ago with very little reason for the shift. ) What I wonder is whether a Romney like candidate, who is not the weird Mitt Romney, could be tough to beat. Pataki might be that person.

He is lucky in that he left the governorship before the collapse of the economy. He could possibly be seen, like Bill Clinton, as from a time when things were better. (Then again though I lived in NJ then, I have no clear memories of much of anything that he did.)

...yes he was contrived and he sold out all his principles to suck up to the Tea Party, but he can deliver a speech is a way Pataki never could.

It may be fortunate that Romney already won and lost -- I know that Nixon was nominated twice, but there was a gap in between.
