Thousands march across USA to protest NYC chokehold death
Melanie Eversley and Charisse Jones, USA TODAY 8:10 p.m. EST December 4, 2014
NEW YORK - Protesters across the nation swarmed city streets on Thursday to voice outrage and their demands for police and judicial reform in the wake of Eric Garner's death and the refusal by a grand jury to indict the officer who put a chokehold on him.
From One Police Plaza in New York City to Oakland, Calif., and from Savannah, Ga., to the Twin Cities, people unhappy with the lack of an indictment in the July death of Garner, 43, continued to stop traffic, stage "die ins" in which groups of people lay down on sidewalks or floors and otherwise protest peacefully.
They communicated and shared photos of their efforts and emotions on social media, making @ICantBreathe a trending hashtag. On a cellphone video of the chokehold incident in Staten Island, Garner, an asthmatic, is heard saying "I can't breathe" to at least eight times after Officer Daniel Pantaleo administered the chokehold.
In Manhattan, a multi-racial crowd marched down Broadway, sometimes blocking taxi cabs and buses, chanting "Hands up, don't shoot," an homage to Michael Brown, the 18-year-old unarmed black man fatally shot by a Ferguson, Mo., police officer in August. Thousands massed on the Brooklyn Bridge alone.

(14,691 posts)stood around chanting off & on for about an hour. Then a group (I assume from Union Square) arrived a;nd a cheer went up and people joined them. I thought I knew where we were going but they kept surprising me. Now I see on Fox 5 local news that there is a mob of thousands in Herald Square (34th Street Macys neighborhood) sitting in the street. WOW!
Edit: also they were at the Staten Island Ferry, and Harlem, and there are still multiple separate groups roaming around.

I fully support all the protesters across the country.
I read about the national action in Washington in a week. I might take a very long bus ride to attend!
We must change things. We must.

(14,691 posts)just to show that we're not all racist jerks. I was a child during the '60s civil rights strife and while it was far from where I lived, the news programs made an impression. Plus, I wasn't raised to be prejudiced.
How far from DC are you? From past experience I'd have to get up at 4 to get to a bus leaving at 6 for a 5 hour ride, then repeat a few hours later. I can't do that anymore.

(32,324 posts)Ended my Chicago girlhood innocence.
I lived in Chi town. I had been helped by the Black Panthers, when lost in the "bad neighborhoods."
A month prior to the event, I had been driving on Chicago's south side, when I witnessed a middle aged Chicago cop beating a young African American kid, probably around nine yrs old, with his billy club.
Another cop did not want my report, and I was told, "It is none of yr business."
The Black Panther murder story headlines screamed at Chcicago residents for a week, that a squad of conscientious Chicago men in blue had gone to the Fred Hampton apartment, and when they were met with a serious barrage of bullets from the BP's, they opened fire, in order to save their own lives.
A decade or more later, it came out that of the hundreds of rounds of bullets fired, ony one had come from the Black Panthers weapons, and that shot had endedup in the ceiling, as though the person firing it had been sleeping and then roused by something, so they did not have time to take proper aim. At this later date, it was also revealed that Hampton was not suffering from fatal wounds when taken from his apartment, but that the police deliberately fired into his body while he lay on a gurney, killing him.

(22,651 posts)It should be very rare for police to knock anyone to the ground or handcuff behind the back.
The zip-ties used for handcuffs have to go as well, its to tight/painfully.
Sure the zip-tie, tear gas, busses full of cages and shock torture devices, sales Corps will be pissed off at the loss of sales.. to hell with them.
This is "the peoples government" not the Corps gov.
