Thousands of people united for a single cause at Angel Stadium of Anaheim Sunday to show their support for the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks.
The 11th annual walk, sponsored by ABC7 and Autism Speaks, kicked off at 8 a.m. The walk benefits autism research and programs to raise awareness. Last year's event raised $250,000.
Eyewitness News Anchor Phillip Palmer served as the emcee at the event. ABC7's Eileen Frere, Ric Romero and Rob McMillan also joined the community dedicated to raising money...
An estimated 1.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with autism. That includes 1 of every 68 children.

Current crowd estimate is 10-12,000, the largest ever for the annual event. California autism prevalence cited as 1 in 50 children.

(4,959 posts)And as for the point that AS "silences actual autistic people," here's a counterexample just posted after I learned about a new play and recent movie theater program developed for families of children with autism. None of it promotes AS, by the way. That's ancillary as far as I'm concerned.
This guest blog is by Autism Speaks Staffer Kerry Magro. Kerry is an award winning national speaker who is on the autism spectrum.
Maybe AS is the group which won't be silenced, problematic as they may be, because not everyone with an autism diagnosis is happy and healthy. I support those efforts totally. Bullying won't change that.
