Carolers in New York tweak classics to protest police violence
Source: Reuters
Reuters) - Amid a sea of holiday shoppers, about 30 protesters, among them professional opera singers, gathered on Sunday in midtown New York to sing Christmas carols modified with lyrics lamenting recent cases of police violence against African American males.
The event, which drew smiles from onlookers, was in contrast to more charged protests, including a night earlier in Seattle, where people threw rocks at police, and in Berkeley, California, where looters smashed store windows.
In the reimagined songs, "O Little Town of Bethlehem" became "O Little Town of Ferguson," the Missouri city where Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old, was shot dead in August by a white police officer. A grand jury declined last month to indict the officer, Darren Wilson, sparking a nationwide wave of protests.

(Reuters) - A fifth day of nationwide protests against police violence was set to begin on Sunday after overnight clashes in two West Coast cities as New York's police commissioner said an internal investigation into a chokehold death could last four months.
After a relatively calm night in New York City, 13 people were arrested overnight in angry demonstrations in Seattle, where crowds threw rocks and attacked police, and in the California university town of Berkeley, where windows were smashed, stores looted and tear gas fired at protesters.
Protests were planned on Sunday in dozens of cities across the country, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami and Minneapolis.

(70,242 posts)Ferguson, Eric Garner Protesters Clash With Police Across Country
Dec 7, 2014, 2:29 PM ET
By GEETIKA RUDRA
Protesters march in downtown Durham, N.C., Dec. 5, 2014 during a demonstration against the non-indictments of the police officers involved in the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner in New York City.
Hundreds of people took to the streets this weekend in cities across the country in protest against the killing of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City. Here's an update on where police and marchers clashed.
Peaceful Protests in Berkeley, California, Turn Violent
A protest in Berkeley Saturday night turned violent when protesters began to throw bricks, pipes and smoke grenades at police officers, police told ABC News. Officers responded by releasing tear and smoke gas on some demonstrators.
Some individuals broke away from the main protest group and went through several Berkeley neighborhoods, vandalizing cars and breaking windows. They also looted businesses, including a Trader Joe's, a Radio Shack and a Wells Fargo Bank. Numerous police cars were also vandalized.
Police responded to violent demonstrators by using smoke and tear gas on crowds who refused to disperse. It is unclear how many arrests were made or how many injuries were reported.
Demonstrators in California Struck in Hit-and-Run
A handful of protesters in Riverside, California, were struck by a BMW that drove through a large crowd Saturday evening, according to ABCs Los Angeles station KABC.

More professional athletes were wearing "I Can't Breathe" messages Sunday in protest of a grand jury ruling not to indict an officer in the death of a New York man.
Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose wore the message on his T-shirt during warmups before Saturday night's home game.
Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush and Cleveland Browns cornerback Johnson Bademosi warmed up in shirts with the message before NFL games Sunday. St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Davin Joseph wore the message on his cleats.
"Honestly, I've always been the quiet kid. I've always been the one who's reserved, to kind of sit back and not really get into politics and things like that," said Bush, whose mother has been a police officer for about 20 years. "But I don't know why I just felt some kind of ... I guess the situation just touched me.............

(70,242 posts)Anonymous Brings Down Oakland PD Website After Cops Gas Protesters
By The Free Thought Project on December 8, 2014
The fifth night of nationwide protests over the widespread failure of the system to prosecute white officers who kill unarmed black men and boys, culminated in hacktivist group Anonymous taking down the Police Departments website in Oakland, California.
Protesters retreat while police officers deploy teargas to disperse a crowd comprised largely of student protesters during a protest against police violence in the U.S., in Berkeley, California December 7, 2014 (Reuters / Noah Berger)
The group was responding to the firing of tear gas at hundreds of protesters in the city.
While recent police killings of two black men happened in New York and Missouri, it was the West Coast that experienced heightened moods.
In a second night of protests on Sunday, multiple injuries and arrests have been made in Oakland and Berkley. Acts of vandalism and rock-throwing by rioters started to take place as splinter groups broke off from the original peaceful march. Someone smashed a window of a local Radio Shack store, which escalated the situation. According to Police Officer Jennifer Coats, one protester tried to stop the act of vandalism and received a hammer to the head.
This followed the latest incident that became a tipping point the jurys unwillingness to prosecute another white police officer, this time for choking an unarmed black man to death.
Similar incidents were seen in Oakland, where people were seen walking on the roads and blocking traffic on roads and a nearby freeway. No conclusive arrest figures have yet been released for Sunday.
There is still no word if any protesters were injured in the tear-gas exercise. The only notable injury was an officers dislocated shoulder. However, at one point, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on a line of about 100 police in riot gear, pushing back against a crowd of 300-400 people.
It also reported other people being hit by tear gas not just protesters.
Initial demonstrations in New York and Missouri started out peacefully, calling for police reforms as politicians appealed for calm. Others joined the protesters in calling for unity and a more representative political apparatus.
