Tory peer forced to eat her words after claiming poor people can’t cook

Lady Jenkin’s remarks overshadow launch of report examining rapid rise in numbers of Britons who are reliant on food banks

Attempts to establish a political consensus on how to tackle the growing problem of hunger in Britain came under strain on Monday as a Conservative who helped launch a cross-party report on the issue declared that one of the principal causes of food poverty was that “poor people do not know how to cook”.

Lady Jenkin’s comments – for which she later apologised – came at the Westminster launch of Feeding Britain, a Church of England-funded report examining the causes of the rapid rise in the numbers of people becoming reliant on food banks.

The peer told the press conference, which was attended by the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, that low-income people who used food banks did so in part because they were not skilled enough in cooking and food management.

Her words were in marked contrast to the conclusions of the cross-party report, which says structural issues such as benefit delays and cuts, coupled with low wages and rising living costs, are predominantly to blame for tens of thousands of families experiencing hunger.

“We have lost a lot of our cookery skills. Poor people do not know how to cook,” Jenkin said. “I had a large bowl of porridge today, which cost 4p. A large bowl of sugary cereals will cost you 25p.”

and a typical kitchen set up. I will be nice give her a spice rack as a head start and a couple of boxes of pasta you know the typical pantry items for someone of a low income. She will be crying in a week as all her money will be close to being gone.

Doesn't this sound like something one of our hard-rightists would say? "Rice and beans, that's all they need."

When told that the fuel excise included in his budget would hurt the poor the most, he replied "poor people don't drive cars".

He was later forced to apologise. I'm not sure if he ever understood what he said wrong.

A Tory peer who slammed poor people for using food banks is on the House of Lords committee that spent £250,000 on champagne since David Cameron has been in office.

Baroness Jenkin has apologised after blaming a dramatic increase in demand for emergency food assistance on a lack of cookery skills.

Yesterday we told how pampered peers at the House of Lords refused to cut their catering budget after buying more than 17,000 bottles of bubbly costing £260,000.

That decision was made by the Refreshment Committee, which has a £1.3million annual catering budget for the House of Lords and Baroness Jenkin is one of their 13 members.

Oh that's commonplace among people who believe what they read in the Daily Mail.

We don't have food stamps yet, but you can bet it's on the British establishment's itinerary.
