Men rescue kids during Arizona apartment fire

Source: AP

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Bystanders worked together to lower two young children to safety from a third-floor apartment in suburban Phoenix where nearby units were on fire.

The rescue took place Monday in Mesa after bystanders responded to Joelle Rozell, the mother of the children, who screamed from the balcony that her children were with her.

The family had taken refuge on the balcony because there was too much smoke and heat in a hallway leading to their apartment, fire Capt. Craig Chenery said.

A man climbed up to the apartment and straddled a railing while lowering the 11-month-old boy and 4-year-old girl to a man on a balcony below. The children were then handed off to another man.

do the life saving and heroic acts of courage long before the official helpers arrive on the scene.

And that means you or me.

(Think I'm going to check in with our local Red Cross and get recertified...)

Good for those bystanders to stop standing by...and leap into action!
